I am interested in going to dental school in Texas. I have heard it is particularly hard to get into any of the Texas schools if you are not a Texas resident. I am a CA resident. Should I even bother submitting my app there? (20 AA, 3.85 sGPA, 3.78 nonscience GPA)

All of the Texas schools do accept OOS. The max OOS students each school is allowed to take is 10% of the total class. so approx 10~ OOS students per school. The schools also have no obligation to fill those "OOS spots" so there might even be less than 10 spots. You could apply and hope for a miracle but based on pure number of seats available its pretty unlikely. Your stats are good though!

My god... I dont even want to try for Texas as I'll max out at 3.5 ogpa 3.4 sgpa. And hopefully when I retake that DAT a 24/25 >🙂.

Do you have any connections to Texas or their dental schools (e.g. grew up there, family connection to the state, research interests aligning with faculty there)? If so, you probably stand a much better chance as an OOS applicant than what the ADEA numbers might suggest.

I am from Louisiana, and this cycle I am interested in applying to all the Texas schools albeit I know they are very selective of their OOS applicants. LSU is ideally where I want to be, but I am looking at applying to most nearby schools if there's a possibility they'll look at OOS students even though my GPA isn't the best. My GPA won't be as high as TS (~3.4GPA/~3.3sGPA) , but my DAT AA is a 21. I have lived in Texas for a year (~10 years ago), if that matters. I have relatives there as well. How would I make a connection to Texas from my application is I want to keep the application as general as possible? Do you guys even think it's worth the cost to apply to all three Texas schools with my stats?

Thanks!

There was actually a student from louisiana that was interviewing with Baylor on my interview day. I think the only reason she got the interview was because she did SPEP with Baylor over the summer. I ran into quite of few OOS applicants during my Texas interviews actually. I'm curious to see how many of them actually got accepted.

Just quite disappointed in myself. I know two people who both got 26+ lol but they have better things to do then post here and show off. I'm not super comfy with my chances but I'm still going to yolo and apply for 2017. My naive young self lol.

Nothing wrong for aiming higher. Two of my friends from undergrad who will be joining me as classmates in dental school, who don't use SDN, have 26 AA and 28 AA's respectively. SDN doesn't contain all of the good scores, I think that's a common misconception.
Nor does it contain all the people who get in with decent scores.
It's like kids from my college, all of them think that if they don't have a 4.0 they shouldn't even apply or try for dental/medical/professional degrees.

I think you should still apply, I wish you the best of luck!:highfive:

Anyone who has followed me knows I went to d-school twice - 1996 (San Antonio) for 2 yrs and 2006 (Houston). The first time I was OOS from Idaho and the second time I set up residency in Texas prior to applying. In 1995, when I applied to d-school, I had no choice to apply as an OOS to d-schools as Idaho has no d-school - only an agreement with Creighton. I applied to quite a few schools because of the OOS status to include San Antonio because I knew someone going there at the time. I had similar stats as the OP. I got into all schools I applied. Anyways, even though there are more applicants to d-schools 20 yrs later, the OP's scores are still awesome contrary to what some people here are thinking. His stats are good enough to get him into OOS schools, BUT he does have one negative thing going for him. He is from California. Since California has so many d-schools, OOS schools are more likely to consider people with similar stats from other states. Is it impossible? No. You just have to shine in all other aspects. The OP's chances of getting into d-school are much better at one of the California d-schools. My question for the OP is why do you want to go to one of the Texas school? You are going to get a great education in California too.

Haha oh hey! I didn't mean to offend. Getting into baylor from OOS is extremely difficut and a commend you on your accomplishment. I was just saying that because the OP asked if I knew of any OOS that that got in without any connections to the school before hand. I know doing SPEP goes a long way with Baylor it can definitely help tip the scales when getting one of the very few OOS spots available.
Again I apologize.
Congrats on your acceptance!

Thank you for your insightful response. I want to go to Texas schools because 1. I am sick of California I have been here my whole life. I want to try some place new. And California is too expensive 2. I may eventually want to live in Texas. I know I can move to Texas after dental school, but like I said Cali is expensive. Approximately 100k a year for California and 35-40k a year in Texas (well in in state) not sure out of state

UCLA and UCSF tuition don't cost this much each year. probably 60k for tuition and fee.
you can also look into schools that give in state after a year that accept 30-40% out of state.
