Hey everyone,
I was just wondering, because i'm currently taking 3 classes: GOVT II and 2 History classes that are required for my major in order to graduate. (I "walked" in the summer graduation ceremony). Do classes/grades matter after you have already applied for dental school?

History and government is really not my thing, and I feel like i might be getting B's..in all three of them and that might lower my final gpa. But I have already submitted my dental application, although, I wrote what my "planned" courses are on the application.

To be more concise, do dental schools still process your application without delay even if they don't receive your updated transcript from your "planned" classes? =P

Good question. I would think that would depend on how "attractive" the rest of your application is. If you have a 3.9 sGPA and scored a 25 on the DAT, then one would assume that a B or two in some social studies courses wouldn't be a big deal.

The classes and the grades you get in them definitely matter. If you have already taken all of your prerequisites prior to applying then it probably will not matter as much but the schools still want to see that you can do well in whatever it is you are taking. If I had to guess, the success, or lack thereof, later in a student's academic career will be most indicative of the kind of performance you can expect from that student in dental school. When I applied, I was not accepted until our Spring quarter and I was told by the dean of admissions that the 4.0 and 3.9 I earned in the autumn and winter quarters was the factor that gave me the edge in being accepted. A word to everyone applying, you have worked extremely hard for three or more years, don't blow it on some cupcake classes in your senior year.

Technically though, do dental schools hold off on your application until they receive the grades for your "planned" courses?

I am applying this year....3.1 GPA, 2.8 science (I know, it's rough.) I have 7,000 hours community service & 200 hrs. shadowing. Taking my DAT in August. Excellent LOR's and Personal statement but is it a waste to apply this year? THANK YOU!

most acceptances start going out Dec. 1 - so technically no. But if you or on an alternate list or if you have a late submission date, then it might make a difference. but that doesn't mean u can slack off after (if) you get accepted. ive heard of people having their acceptances rescinded because they did not finish whatever they were committed to or smthn along those lines. I mean if you end up with a B or a C in some random non req class, it may not make too much of a difference overall. Just maintain a good work ethic and u will be fine.

Again, I think that would depend on the rest of your grades and things like LORs and DAT score.

If you have a high sGPA and a high DAT, they may care a little less about the last of your classes (especially since they're history classes). But if you're sitting at a 3.4 and an 18 on the DAT, they may take a wait-and-see-how-he/she-does-this-last-semester approach to your application.

Anybody with a little more experience want to weigh in on this? I think it's a good question.

oh i see. Well these are the last 3 classes I need to take before I can get my diploma. I'm done with undergrad after this summer.
Now i kind of regret listing these "planned" courses in my application. If I didn't, they might just review my application without knowing I'm still taking a few more classes over the summer. HAHA. But it's always better to be honest right? lol
