... Will it be on the attendance sheet? I have a horribly embarrassing name that I hate being called by, so I'm wondering if they actually have your preferred name next to your actual name on the attendance so that I don't have to keep correcting my professors.

Yeah, you'll probably have to correct each new professor you get as all formal documents will have your legal name on it. However, they will call you by a preferred name, and you should be able to put that name on your white coat (at least my school gave us that option).

Another option could be to legally change your name....

That sucks. Well at least I'll be able to put it on my coat. Thanks! 👍

if your preferred name is a middle name, now is a good time to change that, when you are starting up new records at a new school. J. Andrew Smith vs John A. Smith. just a thought.

I have been unable to make the preferred name stick, as they will inevitably call you by whatever your badge says.

Parents giving their children embarrassing names is a big peeve of mine. I know a guy named Ashley. It's like they don't stop and think of the social consequences a name can have on a person. We don't even really need names. Just ID numbers.

Is it Kelly Rajnigandha Kapoor?

Haha... No, it's a little more stripper-ish than that.

No it's not a middle name. What do you mean change it? Legally?

Seriously? 🙁 You dont have the option to change your badge?

👍 I agree. However, ID #'s arent as easy to remember..lol. 😛

Last time I had attendance called in class was High School. Or maybe it was middle school.

I can't think of any med schools that would call attendance during lecture, since most of them have classes over 100. Maybe during PBL sessions at some schools. In any case, I doubt anyone in med school will care if you have an embarrassing name.

no, i meant just fill out registration paperwork placing the initial in a different place, which doesn't work unless your preferred name actually is one of your names. but the fact that you were contemplating a name change means you must be pretty anxious about it. (on the other hand, you caved when one of your parents made a stink)

if you have small group (and everyone does), they will call it because these are typically led by faculty they pulled out of the hospital who only know you by what's on the sheet.

seriously, just correct people nicely when they say it. it's not a big deal.

(unless they named you Gaylord Focker)

Well I guess thats one of the benefits of being in a large class. 🙂

And Yea I know that others won't care but I really do. Maybe it'll just be easier to change my name. My mom will just have to learn to live with it. Thanks everyone!

I know a guy named Ashley and a guy named Courtney. They're brothers. Their mom really wanted girls...

We have several people in our class that go by a different name. They got their preferred name on their white coats, and several of them have doctored up their ID badges to read their preferred name.

You just have to be careful on the legal aspect of things... we had one person turned away from taking Step 1 because his name on his driver's license didn't match the name on file with the school (he had an extra last name).

Oh, I didnt know I could do that. I thought I HAD to put my legal first name. Thanks!

Oh geez. Thanks for the heads up. And I guess the badge thing depends on the school.

Wow, Courtney? It must be nice knowing your mom doesn't approve of your gender. That's the worst I've seen yet.

Throughout my entire undergrad I've gone by my middle name (which I prefer). All you do is talk to the registrar to change it. That's it. Then all documents come out with your preferred name.

A guy named Courtney? Wow....Dr. Cox would've approved of that mother.

I underwent a name change (last name) a few years back, and it really was not a difficult or lengthy process. The hardest part was people getting used to the new last name and telling everyone on the story of why (I'm a male and took the last name of the man who raised me).

Not sure of your ability to do this OP, since your mother seemed hurt that you don't like the other name. My advice? How would she know if you legally changed it. She can call you Jasmine at home behind closed doors, and you can be Bill elsewhere.

Except you have to be careful with legal documentation for the licensing process. The name your school has must match the name on your photo ID when you go take Step 1, 2, and 3. Unless you got married, in which case you have to provide proof of marriage, etc.

It's fine if you go by a certain name, but your legal name must be on file with your med school.

Haha.. I wish i could get away with that but they are going to call my name at graduation, and since this will be a very special moment in my family's history (first to graduate from a 4-year college), she'll most definitely notice. 😳

Courtney and Ashley were both traditionally male names. Just pointing that out because everyone seems overly shocked that someone would give their sons those names. I'm not saying I ever would, just saying that it's only been in the last few decades that these names have been considered female.

OP, I think you owe us your real name in exchange for all this helpful advice!
