I was just wondring if anyone knew if a medical student from an osteopathic medical school can transfer to an allopathic (MD) school. Or vice versa?

😕

I've heard of it being done. Usually it's for an extreme circumstance.

Yes, if:

1. The school you are transferring to has openings (i.e. people dropped out leaving spots open.)

2. If transferring between years II & III, you passed all of your courses and the USMLE step I

3. If transfererring between years I & II, you passed all of your courses.

4. You submit 3 recommendations from your school, including one from your Dean.

5. You are currently in "good standing" at your school.

6. You submit a usual AMCAS application with MCAT scores.

7. You supply a personal statement including sufficient reasoning for transferring.

8. You are able to "outcompete" other transfer applications (i.e. you have better qualifications than the other M.D. and D.O. applicants.)

--> You will not be interviewed until the summer just before you enter, since the total number of spots will not be known until the academic year ends.

Keep in mind: there are few schools that will actually do this.

If you don't have the credentials to get into the school in a traditional manner, keep in mind that the stakes will be MUCH higher, since there may only be 1 or 2 spots available.

And the school must accept osteopathic transfers - many only accept transfers from other LCME schools (i.e. allopathic schools)

GOOD SO NOW THAT QUESTION HAS BEEN ANSWERED.

IF YOU NEED MORE INFO.. do search on SDN. THIS HAS BEEN TALKED ABOUT BEFORE.
ALSO IN PREVIOUS POST YOU CAN FIND VALID EXCUSED FOR YOU TO MAKE UP. MOTHER SICK... WIFE MOVING... JOB/School. A NEW ONE IS RED STATE TO BLUE STATE.

Now for all you people who don't mind having a DO rather then using it as a back door... lets carry on with our pathetic life.

1. Correct
2. Correct
3. Correct
4. Wrong, you only need a letter of approval from your dean
5. Correct
6. Wrong, you are not required to submit the AMCAS application, just your
MCAT scores and current medical school grades.
7. Correct
8. It's not the trying to outcompete, it is having a valid reason, but you
better have decent numbers so they can see you are a hard worker and
dedicated to being a good student for their school too.

To the OP, I am currently in the process of transferring from a private DO school to a state MD school. It can be done, you just need to have an excellent reason. You will have to take the USMLE earlier (middle of May) so the school will see a passing score prior to starting 3rd year.

You would be suprised at the number of people and the number of schools that allow transfers.

If you have anymore questions just ask.

Actually, my information was taken from a medical school's website on the subject. It is different for many schools, however, what I said is not wrong for some cases.

--some schools actually require a recommendation letter from the dean and an AMCAS application, complete with college grades and scores

OSU, that's probably a good point.

To those that have PMed me give me a couple of days and I will respond to your messages.
