If you have to take a lab for a science course, can you take it after you completed the course. Say i took genetics this semester, can i take the lab next year's spring semester or will that not be accepted?

Yes, you can take them in different semester. I took the genetics lab last semester and I will be taking the class this Spring semester.

At certain schools the lab will be a co-requisite to the class. Therefore, you'll need special permission to not enroll in the lab.

As the above poster said, some schools require you to take the courses at the same time. But dental schools don't care when you take the course/lab, as long as you complete it (assuming it is a pre-req).

I doubt you can do the same for freshmen and sophomore pre-requisite courses.

I attended a private university that required us to take the lab with the class. It seemed like a pain then, but looking back I am so glad I did. My sister-in-law went to a state university and didn't take labs with the classes. She is having to pick up lab courses while applying to medical schools. It's a pain for her to go back and do lab work, and I don't think it looks very good while applying, either. Just my opinion.

At my private university, if it was 0 credit lab, then you had to take it with the lecture course. If it was a 1+ credit lab, then you can take it any time you want. It should be specified in your university handbook or schedule.
