I'm filling out my AADSAS app and it say's we can submit a maximum of four letters of evaluation. I have three professors sending letters, and I'm wondering if it's necessary to have a dentist send one in as well. I realize it can only help you, but I don't know if I can get a quality LOE from a dentist. The three professors are writing excellent LOE's, do you think that will be enough? Thanks

Some schools also require a letter from a dentist, to be in the safe mode it's best to get one. If you feel like it wouldn't be that strong you can talk your dentist if you could write the recommendation letter and have them read and sign it for approval. Some dentist are willing to do this since most of them are busy with their job and less effort for them. Hope this helps.

My "letter of recommendation from a dentist" is actually from an orthodontist. Do you think that is ok? It just occurred to me that when schools says "dentist" they might just mean "general dentist".

What do you think?

there is no distinction. Any specialist is still a dentist. Most schools prefer that some of your shadowing, if you did any, be with a general dentist, but for the LOR, you can get any dentist (including specialists.)

Most schools require a dentist LOE. If you don't have one, many schools will not even look at your application as they consider it incomplete. You should make sure that all the schools you are applying to do not have a dentist LOE requirement if you opt not to get one.

Thanks! So, I wonder when Tufts Univ. asks for a letter saying we shadowed a dentist for at least 30 hours, I wonder if it's okay if the letter says we "shadowed for 3 years"?
