I was looking through some MGMA data on physician earnings and while different specialties (family and internal aside) are compensated differently on an annual basis, there doesn't seem to be a lot of difference in compensation when looking at it on a per work RVU basis.

I was wondering if someone knowledgeable on the topic could answer whether the disparities in compensation for the various medical specialties (again, fm and im aside) are really due to some folks putting in more work RVUs than others. And as a corollary, whether "work RVUs" really are representative of how many hours/how hard each procedure is.

I guess to sum it up, I'm wondering whether a specialist getting paid 100K for putting in 5000 work RVUs per year is essentially compensated the same as the doctor getting 200K for putting in 10000 work RVUs per year.
