Do you do passage outlines?

The Kaplan course puts a ton of emphasis on doing an 'outline' of passages - a very short, couple-words phrase on what each paragraph is about. Have any of you found success with this? I've kind of been eschewing it but now I'm wondering if it really does make a difference.
