Do you guys go to class?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I wouldn't go if you don't have to and can learn outside of lecture.

I hate going to class. I've started skipping the ones where we don't have attendance, but Michigan requires attendance for about half of them. I wish we could just get a packet of information and an exam date.

Skip every class that doesn't take attendance. Use that time to study.

I agree with cacajuate. Class is useless. Learn to bypass other mechanisms of attendance. If they have you sign in, have someone sign you in. If they make you take a quiz, take the quiz and leave.
Agree, except you have to be careful of having someone else sign you in because that is technically academic dishonesty and it could result in disciplinary action. Usually not, but some professors are jerks and will use that against you even if you do well in their class. I have some friends who were brought before our school's Student Performance Committee for a hearing and ended up on academic probation for doing that.

That's true... just because I never got caught, doesn't mean you may not get caught either. Just be smart about it. Make sure you have your phone on hand and be ready on call in case they do a witchhunt in the middle of lecture so you can run back and pretend you just went to the bathroom. The person (or friends) who signed you in can usually alert you to that. Funny moment: one of my friends signed another friend in, but misspelled his name, LOL. Stupid stuff like that could get you in trouble.

Edit: Don't sit in the front, don't be memorable, it makes you a lot more anonymous and less vulnerable to being singled out. There are some classes where the only time the professor saw me was at the final exam.

An effective strategy that some of my upperclassmen used to get out of trouble (you shouldn't get into if avoidable) is to lawyer up and deny. Never admit wrongdoing.

no. i use to go to all the classes but i was too tired to study at the end of the day. my grade improved once i stopped going to all the classes. i guess it also depends on how you learn but for me going to every single class and learning all the materials for the exam was not possible.

We kind of have to, especially since half of our days end up being labs. But I do try to skip whatever classes I can.

So columbia doesn't require attendance. Where else am I applying?!

I have 8 to 5 schedule every day, and I don't learn anything in lectures. Is it worth going to class?
In my D1 year I used to skip all the time. Like you, I didnt learn much sitting in class so I just spent that time studying solo. Just be sure you wont be missing anything important if you skip, and its always helpful if you have a buddy who could send you notes of anything you may have missed (some professors like to emphasize parts of the lecture they test on)

First year there were a few classes we could skip, now in second year there are no good times to since we have lab every day or in class quizzes.

Heard about someone getting expelled for doing this. Was about 350k in loans when this happened. Skipping class can destroy someone's future if things go wrong.

It's all about choosing a school that record every lecture on class capture/echo or convince your school to invest in it. I never go to class and just watch the recorded lectures at double speed at home!

I'm aware that I'm reviving a 2-year-old thread, but just want to say how I envy the current D2's and incoming D1's as all of their lectures are now recorded due to Covid. So no more showing up at 8am for usesless classes like we did.

If there's a silver lining to covid, it's that it's forcing old school teachers into modern times. The whole "you need to be physically in class to learn, or you're not learning" mindset needs to go

Nope. Why would I when 99% of academic d school is slide Regurgitation with 0 critical thinking. Studying for CBSE was good cause I understand all the phys and path that I would need in dents school. Unfortunately, professors with ego that depends on the # of students in class forced me to show up for classes like cariology etc. COVID was so nice that it showed admin that school can go on without mandatory attendance. I wish all classes were online (maybe finals in person would validate what students actually learned cause I know And everyone Knows they will be open book taking hone exams)

All the pre-clinic boards focused lectures are really pointless in my experience.

If you are not penalized for attendance, I would skip every single class and just read through boards prep books.
However, I would attend at least a lecture or two to evaluate your professor's teaching skills.
Once in a while you'll have professors that know how to teach efficiently and it'll be well worth your time.
If you cannot skip these lectures, wear skin colored bluetooth earbuds to drown out the sound and self-study in the lecture hall.

There's lots of free online CE you can take too once you are done with boards prep to prepare you for real-world dentistry.
You'd want to know how to deal with emergencies and systemic issues compared to knowing the difference between types of periodontal fibers.
