a statue of my great great grandfather(The first principal) is at Seoul National University College of Medicine in Korea. I guess my father is 4th western medical doctor & 5th doctor in my family history 👍

A good friend of mine knows the head of admissions at one school and his great, great grandfather had a part in founding the school. He was told by the head of admissions that he would be the one pick (I guess they can push one student into the program with committee approval on one person's recommendation). He was told he had his in. Guess what? He applied 3 times and didn't get in. He gave up and is now going into teaching.

for every story of a kid with connections getting rejected, there are ten more stories where they got in. of course, those who benefited that way would never talk about it. they'd rather keep that on the DL and say i got in cuz of my unique extracurriculars. very cowardly. if i got in cuz of a connection, i would highlight, rather than hide, that fact. if people wanna hate, just put the hatablockaz on😎 hit em with the life ain't fair.😛

i tutored the daughter of a professor who is a prominent member of faculty at a top medical school. i played the game right and got close to him and he was gonna pull some strings for me. but i decided on the whole dental thing so all that became a waste. he was all trying to push me to do md/phd and stuff and i was just playing along like ooook yeah i love research🙂 i think he'll refuse to even speak to me if i tell him about my switch.😡

if it's possible to obtain a LOR from a professor at ur designated dental school to apply to that school................

I remember it is clearly stated that LOR should be obtained from ur professors at ur undergraduate school & non-relatives..

I agree with you, but I know someone who got into medical school mainly bc her father was a PhD with the pharmacology dept. She didn't mind one bit. She is doing what she loves. Her GPA was about a 3.3 I think.

if your friend had a bad gpa and a bad dat, he is not REALLY smart. this really irks me when people throw that smart label around like free candies. you can make excuses and call yourself smart if you have one of the two but if you have neither, you need to learn to play your role and go sit down and shut up.

Becoming a dentist/doctor/lawyer/what-have-you is not so much a matter of intelligence as it is time management, dedication, motivation, study skills...

Just because a person may have connections doesn't mean that they didn't work hard. If 5 people have the exact same statistics/credentials and there is only one spot and someone has connections and gets it it is because that person was not just another number but someone knows that person on a more personal level and can vouch for their potential and can foresee a future for this person in that profession. That will distinguish applicant 1 from 2,3,4 and 5. In the real world, you are more likely to be hired with a connection than without one and while that may seem unfair to many think about it from the other perspective: if I got into dental school through a connection and I flunked out, how bad would that make my connection look? So, you can argue it in anyway you want but I guess the bottom line is your connection must actually believe in you to get you in through the door and you have to demonstrate some sort of achievement, which all applicants have done.

So here I sit reading these threads and can only come up with one example. I know of someone that got 16 pretty much across the board on her DAT's and because she knew someone on the admissions committee she got in (that is the basic story) and is attending starting this Fall.

Kind of sucks but can't be mad cause she played the game.

IMO the thread topics are actually pretty fresh and interesting. Most of the reason these threads get dragged down is because of constant posts like this.

Daddy will probably need a number of "fat checks" handy what with making sure she passes all of her courses, manages the state board exams, and assures a steady flow of patients for her private practice, unless she can pull all of that on her own.

how about making this a constructive thread. for example...what are appropriate ways to approach a possible connection? phone calls, emails, in-person visits?

a quick note from personal experiences, make sure to proofread your emails (so you don't misspell your own name)
