who has connections at their top choice dental schools? maybe your pops is the dean of admissions or the school's library is named after your grandfather😱 maybe the dentist you've been shadowing has a friend who has a cousin that's friends with a faculty member at the dental school. whatever it is, please share. don't worry it's only the internet, no one will call you out like it was your only reason for getting accepted.

i don't have any connections🙁 i wanna change that.

Kind of. My dad is a Columbia dental alum.

When I was applying, I would have been the 4th generation of dentist to attend NYU dental. My grandfather was a clinical and didactic instructor at the school, and my great-grandfather attended before the school was even associated with NYU (New York Dental College FTW).

Note that I didn't receive an interview, let alone an acceptance.

a statue of my great great grandfather(The first principal) is at Seoul National University College of Medicine in Korea. I guess my father is 4th western medical doctor & 5th doctor in my family history 👍

Technically, I wanna be a 6th doctor in my family history. 😀

anyone has been accepted because of such connections?

Not that I know of..

But, anyway, it's very interesting topic..

Because I saw that kind of things in movies!!

I don't know how u guys think about this issue..

But, here, the connection seems to mean something that is supernatural!!

I thought u guys talking about ....$$$...bribery that is in the movie or CNN news 👎

my mom is a college friend with a wife of the professor at the dental school i am applying to. he used to come over to our places, and when i asked for his LOR, he simply said no

A good friend of mine knows the head of admissions at one school and his great, great grandfather had a part in founding the school. He was told by the head of admissions that he would be the one pick (I guess they can push one student into the program with committee approval on one person's recommendation). He was told he had his in. Guess what? He applied 3 times and didn't get in. He gave up and is now going into teaching.

damn.. kk

I tutored this kid for orgo I and randomly found out that his dad is the dean of UWO's dental school......

but.... he was an idiot who paid me $30 bucks on hour.. kk  I doubt he'll survive dental school

for every story of a kid with connections getting rejected, there are ten more stories where they got in. of course, those who benefited that way would never talk about it. they'd rather keep that on the DL and say i got in cuz of my unique extracurriculars. very cowardly. if i got in cuz of a connection, i would highlight, rather than hide, that fact. if people wanna hate, just put the hatablockaz on😎 hit em with the life ain't fair.😛

i tutored the daughter of a professor who is a prominent member of faculty at a top medical school. i played the game right and got close to him and he was gonna pull some strings for me. but i decided on the whole dental thing so all that became a waste. he was all trying to push me to do md/phd and stuff and i was just playing along like ooook yeah i love research🙂 i think he'll refuse to even speak to me if i tell him about my switch.😡

you are the 4th dentist in your family history...

Can I ask ur ethnicity? 🙂

Great!!

Well, 4th known dentist. Who knows what my ancestors did before they got off the boat at Ellis.

I'm caucasian btw

HAHA, so u are suceeding ur family tradition as a dentist!!

Great! You must be proud of it, and happy!! 👍👍

if it's possible to obtain a LOR from a professor at ur designated dental school to apply to that school................

I remember it is clearly stated that LOR should be obtained from ur professors at ur undergraduate school & non-relatives..

I know that some connections can only get you so far, like if you have a good connection, they can get your application up to the point where you can be considered by the admission board but once all statistics come in, if you don't quite cut it, then it becomes difficult to get accepted just based on that connection.

On the other hand, there are some school where connections can get you an admission ticket. I guess it depends on 1) the position the connection has and 2) the school you are applying to. My best advice: if you live close to the dental school you want to attend try shadowing there at times and visit the school often so people can get to know you . . . you never know who is on the admissions committee.

Ah... The first paragraph is probably what happened to my friend. Too bad, because he would have probably been a really good dentist and he was actually REALLY smart too. 😉

I wouldnt want connections to be able to get into anything, how crappy would you feel about yourself knowing you needed connections to get you in while others got themselves in through hard work and dedication?

I agree with you, but I know someone who got into medical school mainly bc her father was a PhD with the pharmacology dept. She didn't mind one bit. She is doing what she loves. Her GPA was about a 3.3 I think.

that feeling will fade quickly if you don't get in & have to waste a year of your life.

if your friend had a bad gpa and a bad dat, he is not REALLY smart. this really irks me when people throw that smart label around like free candies. you can make excuses and call yourself smart if you have one of the two but if you have neither, you need to learn to play your role and go sit down and shut up.

lol ok god i swear sdn members are the worst when it comes to their walking the e-moral high ground. yeah i'm sure you'll go ahead and turn that acceptance down cuz you got a little extra push from having a connection. 😕

Numbers != intelligence

Becoming a dentist/doctor/lawyer/what-have-you is not so much a matter of intelligence as it is time management, dedication, motivation, study skills...

I think connections are sometimes are by chance.

Networking is a needed and will be invaluable later on (in my opninion)

Just because a person may have connections doesn't mean that they didn't work hard. If 5 people have the exact same statistics/credentials and there is only one spot and someone has connections and gets it it is because that person was not just another number but someone knows that person on a more personal level and can vouch for their potential and can foresee a future for this person in that profession. That will distinguish applicant 1 from 2,3,4 and 5. In the real world, you are more likely to be hired with a connection than without one and while that may seem unfair to many think about it from the other perspective: if I got into dental school through a connection and I flunked out, how bad would that make my connection look? So, you can argue it in anyway you want but I guess the bottom line is your connection must actually believe in you to get you in through the door and you have to demonstrate some sort of achievement, which all applicants have done.

Wow... I never thought that connection will be that important when I moved here. My mom know someone who donated **** load of money to pacific. He got the building with his name...(asian btw). Don't know I get in or not but I am sure I have to kiss some serious *** LOL

The only name on the side of this building is Dugoni, and I'm pretty certain he's not asian.

So here I sit reading these threads and can only come up with one example. I know of someone that got 16 pretty much across the board on her DAT's and because she knew someone on the admissions committee she got in (that is the basic story) and is attending starting this Fall.

Kind of sucks but can't be mad cause she played the game.

exactly! why hate? some people are born with natural athleticism, superior intelligence, great personality, huge penis, or into a privileged family. i salute those who got in through their connections. 👍

Honestly I know to many stories to post. Basically if you have money and daddy's little girl has 16's across the board on the DAT and a 3.0 gpa, find a private dental school and write them a fat check. Sounds easy enough and I know more then a handful of people who have been excepted this way.

IMO the thread topics are actually pretty fresh and interesting. Most of the reason these threads get dragged down is because of constant posts like this.

Daddy will probably need a number of "fat checks" handy what with making sure she passes all of her courses, manages the state board exams, and assures a steady flow of patients for her private practice, unless she can pull all of that on her own.

"i salute those who got in through their connections." by the OP.
Now tell me what is fresh and interesting about this topic and OP? Are you sure you are a moderator?
Nothing is fresh and interesting about saluting people who get unfair previliges. The moderator is obviously on the wrong track with this one.

i'd say what is fresh and interesting is saluting people who have figured out how the world works.

how about making this a constructive thread. for example...what are appropriate ways to approach a possible connection? phone calls, emails, in-person visits?

a quick note from personal experiences, make sure to proofread your emails (so you don't misspell your own name)

almost everyone on SDN is pissed off about something...one way or the other:laugh:

You can tell me what's fresh, interesting and worthwhile to have on the boards when you've been here for a few more years 😉

Looks like the action potential threshold has been severely reduced.
