I wouldn't advise someone to drop out after MS2. Stay at least to become a GP... I have a friend who is doing extremely well as a GP. 195k/year working 40 hrs/wk is not bad

Honestly not that drastic. Surgical residencies have very high drop-out rates. A jama study a couple years ago (Prevalence and Causes of Attrition Among Surgical Residents) showed almost 20% either transfer residency or drop out.
