dO YOU NEED cHEM 2 FOR ocHEM?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I don't think you need it, materialwise. But my school required that you had already taken chem 2 and gotten a C in it in order to move on.

I took them at the same time.

I would like to take them at the same time too (with two "fluff" courses, of course.)

I don't think it'll happen, but when the time comes, I'll look into it.

I would definately say finish General chem first. I know a lot of people told me way back that you don't need it for Ochem. Well I will tell you this, you learn a lot of things that don't stick in your head at first in General (like orbitals, properties of elements, etc) but when you brush over it in organic you will be glad you had some foundation. In Organic recognizing orbitals and geometry of the molecules is everything. I like Organic, and general chem and found them both to be easy(with work of course), but I think a strong foundation will help. Good luck.

in most schools, gen chem 2 is a prereq for orgo. although i don't remember too much of what we did that semester, so i don't know if you need it content wise, but every school also teaches the curriculum differently and some topics are rearranged. i heard this often happens in science classes, like in my orgo class, we did IR and NMR in the first sem, whereas in my friends school, that was a topic covered in second sem.

Nah, you don't need it. I took orgo I & II last year, and am only now getting around to finishing Gen Chem.

DRANTWAN, Are you planning on going to med school? If so, you'll need the class anyway. So might as well just knock it out. But no, you don't really need GChm2, so it's okay if you were to take it later.

Unless you need it to get the computer to allow you to register, its almost entirely unrelated.

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyway, you need it for med school, and it will help very much for OCHEM, so take it first.😉

Nothing from GChem 2 was related to my OChem 1 course...

Though most of the foundation you need for organic is covered in Chem 1 (orbitals, structures, etc.), it may help to take Gen. Chem 2 before organic solely for the purpose of getting used to common formal charges of various elements (2- for oxygen, 1- for the halides, etc.) and other common patterns in the periodic table (electronegativity, radius of orbitals, etc). Sure you can memorize these patterns, but nothing beats learning them really well by frequent application of them throughout the year.
