Hey guys! I am wondering if any of you are planning to work during dental school? If you are, how do you plan on doing that? Being in class and studying takes up a lot of time, does your school schedule allow you to work? I read somewhere on here about being a hygienist during dental, an more people attest to this? What is your school policy on this?

Being a dental student is a full time job. Of course there are some people that manage to do something on the side, but I've been told by faculty and students that part-time jobs aren't worth the pain at this point. Also, to even become a dental hygienist takes at least two years of dental hygiene schooling.

Some of my classmates work during breaks, but never during the school year. There's too much lab work and studying to be done for you to be able to make any amount of money that would be worthwhile.
 
Do people take out loans for just about everything then, including personal expenses (food, going out, etc) and living costs?

This is terrifying...the amount of student debt we will all be in.... :bigtears:
but hey...if other grads have done it...so can we? (or at least thats what I'm telling myself to remain sane)
 
Some people work for a few hours at the end of the day in school, but I do not think it will make a big dent in the loan amount

You would have to put a ton away during your next 4 years to make any kind of difference.

Concur. It really wouldn't even be worth someone's time to try and do that.
 
Also, if you do save a good chunk of money in undergrad, they're going to expect you to put a lot of it towards your dental school expenses, and you might not be offered loans to cover the budget 100%.
 
My roommate is doing some work thing online. I forget what the company is called but he works one hour every day (6:30-7:30am). He just goes through comments on website pages or something and deletes irrelevant or posts that have been reported, etc. At the end of the month, that's about 400 dollars. That's pretty nice, would pay for food lol. We've been talking about giving plasma too haha, could get 80 dollars a week here if you do it.

I am a hygienist and plan on picking up days during breaks and maybe an occasional half day in Saturdays....
 
I do social media and advertising for a local dentist. I will be putting in about 4 hours a week and making a few hundred extra dollars a month as supplemental income. I don't think this will be tough for me at all because it will all be on my own time and I can devote as much or as little time to it as I want..
 
With 24.5 credits in a semester, class starting at 8 am and ending in the mid afternoon everyday, followed by 3-4 hours of studying plus additional lab work, it's hard to find time to do anything let alone doing a part time job...

Will loans fully cover tuition and fees or loans may not fully cover tuition and fees? Does it depend on FAFSA? What do people do if they do not get enough loans to cover tuition and fees? 😱

Dude. You're going to be in professional school. Some schools require that you do not work. It's not like undergrad. This is huge undertaking in terms of time and money. They give you enough to live on, and in many cases it's rather generous. Of course loans completely cover it. But the goal is to reduce those loans so that you're not paying back $300k plus interest.

I don't really have answers to these questions, but many times loans will only cover most (but not all) of the tuition, fees, and living expenses. However, I'm talking about around $5K difference here. If you/your parents don't have the money to make up the difference, you can probably get a small loan from a bank.

Depending on what school you go to you could literally end up having days where you're in school from 8 AM to 8 PM.

I have clinical rotations that are 8-8. And days I'm not on rotation I am still in clinic either 8-1 or 2-8 with additional time in lectures.

Trust me, finding the time to work in dental school is tough. Your priority should be studying and labwork that you do on your own time, otherwise you WILL fail out.
 
I remember sitting on a bus last year, complaining to a friend about the mere cost of applying to dental school. She jokingly said, "well you could always donate your eggs". We laughed about it then but it's seeming like a more viable option now with each swipe of my credit card...
 
I know and have heard of multiple people at roseman either having the time or actually working many hours a week. So you can go there, that's one way to have time.

Wut???? This is crap. My half of genetic material is only worth $60-70. I call shenanigans.
 
This is because woman has to take injectable hormones for a month before harvesting, it messes up with the mood and weight. The process is pretty unpleasant and painful, compared to a pleasant one for a men

how you know it is pleasant for men? some need hormone too and can cause mood swing and ab loss from weight gain
