I have a question for you wise and experienced 3rd and 4th years.
When you have finished a rotation, do you ever use your books from that rotation? If so, how often? And do you plan to use them to study for step 2?
The reason I ask is that I will be starting clinical rotations soon and would prefer not to spend a ton on books. So I was thinking I could get a group of my classmates together (one from each rotation), and when someone finishes a rotation, she passes her books along to someone who is in that rotation after her. She, in turn, will receive books for her next rotation from someone who has just completed that rotation. So in the end, each person only has to buy books for one out of the six rotations.
Is this idea feasible?

Thanks for your responses.

That's a perfectly good idea, assuming everyone works well from the same books. Some people might like the format of one book over another.

Of course, if you're planning on going into a specific area, you might want to pick up some books there just to have in your personal library.

Don't forget that you can also sell any books you don't want to folks in the classes behind you. You won't get all your $$$$ back, but its better than keeping books around that you consider worthless.

I haven't quite decided how to study for Step 2, but I'm not sure studying specific books from each rotation is the most efficient way to approach it.

I personally prefer to have my own books even if I am not interested in that particular area. If you want to save some cash go to Amazon and check out the used books which you can get for dirt cheap if you don't mind the highlightings and writings. You can even get books that havent' been cracked open for a great bargain.

I never re-used the "assigned" texts, unless it was in my chosen field for my 4th year sub-I. Plus info is so readily available on the internet that if I did have a question and no texts to consult (I often borrowed books 3rd year as well), it was never an issue. Also, 4th year is much more laidback after you finish your sub-i's and submit your residency apps...no tests to study for!

No, studying for step 2 is different from step 1. Buy a step 2 review book and a question book and read thru them the 2 weeks before the exam. You don't need review books for each specific area. Reading the clerkship texts will be time-consuming and a waste of your time if done for the sole purpose of passing step 2.

I buy and sell all my books on amazone marketplace. You can buy used books in brand new condition for 1/2 the price. It has saved me a lot of money!

Selling them on there is pretty easy, and you get a fair price for the books.

Tejada: I shared books with 2-3 classmates in a manner similar to what you described and it worked great for me. Less $$ spent and I never used the books again after my rotations...in the end, we each kept the ones in our choosen field of interest and sold the rest (money gets tight this time of year for the old MS4's, trust me). Best of luck in 3rd year....

I would buy your own books and keep them. You might need them for step 2, also there have been many times when something has come up and i wanted to refer back to my 3rd year books. Keep in mind that i only used review books for 3rd year... Get the First Aid series, they are the best!!! Blueprints for Peds and OB/GYN are also great. Who knows, you might use your books for a transitional or prelim year also...
