Do you use loupes?

Pretty random question, but what determines if a surgeon wears loupes? Is it a type of surgery or just personal preference? I see that dentists use loupes, do your guys use loupes with magnification when you're in surgery usually or no?

Depends on a few things. Some is surgeon preference. You can technically wear them for any procedure but the time I saw a resident wear loupes on a bunion, well, lets just say its still talked about. We use them mostly for some of the plastic procedures such as flaps. Depending on the surgery/surgeon you may not need them at all or they may be one of your most valuable instruments.

This is off topic, but why is there so much case variety with podiatry? I mean the surgeons seem to do SO many different types of procedures that it just seems so interesting. I've shadowed orthopods, otolaryngologist, and a plastic surgeon and the podiatrist I shadowed just had so much variety it was unbelievable. He was my favorite doctor.

We have attendings that just do bunions and hammertoes, and do the same procedure each time. We also have attendings that do just about every procedure you can think of. There is such a variety of procedures because there is a variety of pathology and of ways to treat the pathology.

Nah, not that many podiatrists are employed by hospitals and I wouldn't even think that those who are are the ones with the most variety necessarily. Quite a few podiatrists do at least some hospital work in that they take consults in a hospital. But actually being employed by a hospital is relatively uncommon, I think.
