sorry if this sounds ******ed.

I just transferred to this university and took this one science class last semester. I went to the professor's office hours multiple times and I believe she saw my improvement, ( I got a C in the first test then A's in the next two tests and ended up with an A). Stupidly, I didn't ask her for a letter. Would it be weird if I email her asking her for a letter now? I am sure she still remembers me.

also, what is the best method to ask for a letter? email? go to her office hour even though I am no longer in her class? LOL

also can you have letters of rec from different colleges? I had a pretty good relationship with one of my CC profs.

thanks.

You should ask your professor for a letter now while she still remembers you. It wouldn't be the greatest idea to ask her later when she has many more students throughout the year, and then has to go back and try to remember who you are and how well you did in her classes. Also, you should ask in-person when no one is in her office. It would be weird if you asked in front of other students. Maybe you can email her first, ask if she would be ok with writing you a letter, and then arrange for a time to meet at her office to discuss your qualifications for a LOR. This is just an idea. Also, LORS from a CC is fine, but I recommend that you get the majority of your letters from a 4-year institution. They will appear a lot stronger coming from a university. However, I met someone who got into an Ivy with a LOR from a CC professor. Good luck!

Ok thanks man. But do I use that letter for ALL dental schools I apply to? So I should email her now and ask if she can write me a letter and arrange a time where I can meet her in person? what do I do when I go to her office? I have no clue man. lol

First of all, your initial comment is incredibly offensive to people born into a life of challenge by no fault of their own.. Just so you're aware.

Secondly, there's nothing wrong with asking for a letter from that professor. I would go into her office if you still attend that university. If you don't, send an email. It's pretty customary to leave a thank you note. And yes, whatever note you submit to AADSAS will be sen to all dental schools.

When I ask for the letter of rec. The professor will send the letter directly to AADSAS? and AADSAS will send the letter to the d-schools?

You go to AADSAS first, add the professor's email address on your application, and AADSAS takes care of the rest. They will email your professor, your professor will reply with his letter, and then AADSAS will send it out to all the schools.

Ohh ok. So if I am NOT applying till next year, then I don't need to worry about that right now? A lot sdn people advised me to collect letters now. I am confused LOL.

Please thoroughly read this website for AADSAS details: http://www.adea.org/DENTAL_EDUCATION_PATHWAYS/AADSAS/APPLICANTS/Pages/default.aspx

Every letter that you send to AADSAS will be sent to all of the schools. You cannot select which letters to be sent to the schools. Usually, schools don't accept extra letters, but there are schools that do. There is a maximum 4 letters for AADSAS or a committee letter. Also, you will need a waiver form so that the dental schools know that you didn't read your letters.

Best advice when asking a letter:
1) Email them first. Make it brief and introduce yourself and mention which classes that you took with them. Then ask them if they are comfortable writing a LOR for you.

2) When you arrange a meeting time, bring a folder with your name on it and include the following:
Personal statement (usually they will ask for one), transcript, resume, picture (sometimes they recognize your face more than your name), instructions for where to submit the LOR, waiver, envelope and stamp, a blank sheet of paper (for them to take notes), and additional information that may help them evaluate you. Make sure to take the time to explain what you would like them to cover in your letter, etc. The more your professor gets to know about you, the more your professor can write about you. I know I listed a lot of things to bring, but this is if you want to make sure that your professor has all the information that she can use to write a LOR. For professors that you know very well, you probably just need to bring a personal statement, waiver form, envelope, and stamp.

If you are going to apply next year, you will probably have to ask for your LORs towards the last 1-2 months before AADSAS opens for your cycle. This is because you will be sending it directly to AADSAS and you need to use the AADSAS waiver form. I didn't do this. So, someone on SDN can correct me. If you use a LOR service, then you can ask whenever you want. This is what I did. I hope this helps!

thanks so much guys.
