Generally speaking, do you usually hear from a program one way or another. If not given an interview, do you get a rejection notice? For instance, if you don't make it through the filter, or after app review, etc...

I ask because I've received several interview offers (along with a few rejections) but have quite a few outstanding, especially from some programs that I have a lot of interest in.

I know its only been a couple weeks but I feel like the programs are stringing me along  At least some of the programs have sent out emails letting me know they won't send out interview offers for several weeks but even then, how will I know? Do they all send rejection letters, or do they just not offer you an invite?

Sadly no some programs are just obnoxiously rude and do not give you a yeah or nay.

However it is very early in the process. Give it time. If some programs you really are interested in have not said "boo",contact the prgram director stating your interest and ask if your appliction is still being considered for an interview.

I already have a couple of rejections (one by my home school), so I assume many schools do say yea or nay. I thank those schools that have rejected me though because at least I know, and knowing is half the battle.

That's harsh. You would think you would get a courtesy interview at least.

I am still waiting to hear from residency programs I applied to over 8 years ago. So no, programs don't always let you know if they aren't interviewing you.

You could always send them a letter/email of interest stating that you are still waiting and have been practicing surgery in the meantime. Actually maybe that would be a bad idea (sarcasm doesn't go over well with some).

I would figure some programs who desperately try to interview as many applicants as possible might just keep everyone in a "holding position" as long as possible. Might be an indication of a poor program, or maybe it is assumed that if you as an applicant don't get the interviews you want then it is incumbent on you to call/email programs.

Either way some residency programs make the applicants/residents do all the heavy lifting from the beginning which includes tracking your own application in a way.

Pretty cold, but some medical schools have perhaps poor relationships with the medical school, i.e. Hospital X may be affiliated with medical school x, but not like their students or even attendings at the school. Hospitals are different entities than medical schools and sometimes they are of different ranks. For example a program director at Hospital X could interview everyone from medical school X who did a rotation at said hospital, or they could interview only some and try to get medical students who went to a more prestigious medical school, i.e. getting a harvard medical student and a john hopkins medical student would make hospital X look pretty good.

Just illustrates that hospitals i.e. resident programs are not the same thing as medical schools although they may have close relationships.

But I agree it was a cold thing to do, especially if for something relatively noncompetitive like IM, peds or family . . . If you really wanted to go to your home program then I would physically stop by the Program Director's office and ask the secretary nicely if there was anything you could do to interview. If not then I wouldn't worry and go somewhere better quite possibly.

That is rough. Our school has a policy where everyone gets a courtesy interview.

Yes, even those applying to plastics/derm/ortho/ENT/etc

It's harsh, but funny. It was in a very noncompetative field. I probably would have ranked my home school very very low (I really want to get away). In all honesty I was hoping for an interview for the sole purpose of getting practice.

No need to feel sorry for me, I have several interview invites already.

Is it common courtesy for me to interview you if I am certain I will not rank you? Or am I just stringing you along?

A spot has just opened up. We would love to interview you. Give me a call.

John, its very likely your home school knew this as well then...
Espcially if you are a competitive student, they realize you are very unlikely to really want to go there.

Who knows if they knew or if they didn't, in the end it doesn't matter.

Even though aPD has said I'm special to him, my application is nothing special and I'm not competitive.
