Do your pre-med advisers find out where you get accepted?

Also, can they help you in negotiating financial packages?

(Yes, I know it's early to ask about money. No, I do not yet have any packages, scholarships, or anything of that sort.)

Why you wouldn't want to tell them makes no sense to me. By the time you matriculate, they'd probably appreciate knowing whether they were able to help you achieve your goal.

If I were a pre-med advisor and someone that I had worked with for four years got accepted to medical school and never contacted me again, I would probably take it personally.

Implying that most people on SDN actually talk to their adviser.

If mine didn't have to write me a committee letter, I probably wouldn't even bother with him.

I never did, but I probably should have. The main writer was very nice and helpful.

By the end of the cycle, the pre-med committee is very busy setting everything up for the next cycle.

I agree with you.

The only time I talked to the pre-med office was when I turned in my application for the committee letter and for the mock interview. That's it. I never went to them for advice.

The school I'm doing my post-bacc at is hardcore about their committee letter process, so it's probably more significant in my case.

I was just asking because I lost internet that day and wanted to know if I got in somewhere 😛

I realize how irrational that sounds now. hahaha

They can see things about our application. I'm in touch with the head of my pre med committee pretty often as she was my research mentor as well. They can see the schools you applied to and the action those schools have taken.

To be honest I wouldn't tell my advisor. He's such an a-hole to students. And to make matters worse, he charges $200 to open a file with him, and then $50 per letter/school. So assuming you send two faculty letters, and one comittieletter its $150 per school. I am not sure if every school has the same prices, but that's a ton of money just for sending out letters. His explanation for it happens to be that it the cost keeps the pre-med office open. I think if I had a good advisor then I would have actually told him where I got accepted to.

That's such bull****. If my adviser ends up charging me for his crappy letter, I'm gonna be pissed.

😱 😱

I would just skip the committee letter and just send in individual letters. Actually, that's what I did do. That was just to avoid some minor aggravation. That is some bull****.

Working with pre-med advisers is SO unnecessary. It proved to cause nothing but problems for me. Essentially, it just adds another hurdle. Sure, I'd love advice, but when they all but MAKE us get a "committee letter"... Personally, I think it should be the applicant's choice (ok, technically it is but it's generally looked down upon). If, for some reason, the pre-med advisor doesn't like the applicant-- well then what happens? They have little accountability and we will never actually see the letters. I guess, at the same time though, the applicant just has to overcome this hurdle-- further proving that he or she is dedicated enough to get through a bunch of BS. But, thankfully this is ALL OVER 🙂

That's utterly ridiculous. I've never heard that before so I don't know how common it is but really? WTF?:wow:

😕 My school does it for free.
