I will be shadowing a neurosurgeon soon and I spoke with him briefly, he told me to make sure to obtain documentation from my professor or advisor. Does anyone know which type of documentation one would need in order to shadow?

I think he needs something saying that I am doing this shadowing for credit because the Hospital doesn't allow him to bring in random people? Not 100% sure though, did anyone else have to get some type of documentation for their shadowing?

I didn't. In fact, all I was supposed to do was sign some papers, but never ended up doing that either. I still got to watch some awesome surgeries (being 1-2 feet away from someone coming off from bypass while their chest cavity is exposed is awesome). It's always a great idea to have documentation, but I don't so all I have to show for my hours of shadowing are the experiences that I can share.

I don't think the Doctor wants me to document my time shadowing. I think he wants me to have a statement that would allow me to shadow him... I really have no idea what he is talking about actually. But he wants it before I start to shadow him.

Never heard of documentation like that, but shadowing is a real hit or miss thing depending on where you live.

For instance around "here," you need to have gone through an approval process which includes TB testing, a short course in safety and health precautions, a hospital ID card, etc.

But I have never heard of needing something from a prof.

And you may need proof that you got a flu shot. Around "here" you need a stamp on your hospital ID card showing you got the shot, or else you have to wear a mask full time...

Just ask him about it.

Just to shadow? That sucks. The process you're talking about is what I had to go through to become a volunteer.

Only thing that my doctor asked for is some sort of ID that identifies me with the institution I represent....aka school ID or work ID since I work at the hospital of the school I go to lol.
I can't imagine what else you need. Maybe he wants you to get a name badge...if so you have to go through the whole vaccination and TB testing ordeal. That was the case for me interning at UCI for the past two summers.

But as someone already suggested-ask him what specific documents he needs.

I'll ask him again, the good news is that he's one of my buddies' father, but still a very busy and professional man. What he told me he wanted was documentation showing that I am shadowing for credit because the hospital doesn't just let any random person shadow? I'll make sure to e-mail him and/or get some b.s. letter from my advisor.
