Yesterday, I rear-ended a car where my car caught fire, but everyone was fine. Even the other only suffered through rear bumper damage only.
I'm still a teen, if that makes any difference. Is this a crime in any way, and would it show up on my background check when accepted? Also, would this negatively affect my application process in any way?

Thanks in advance for the replies.

its not a crime, man. chill. it happens to everyone. I hope everyone is okay. I like how you thought about the application process. SDN is crazy. It will not affect you in anyway.

I do, however, think you should write your personal statement on it.

That brings up a good point. I was a lumberjack one summer and cut down a whole bunch of trees. Am I doomed?

Thanks for the reassurance, witness. Yes, everyone's okay. The other lady complained about pain in the head, but doctor found her to be fine after tests.

I do in fact need something to write a PS, hmmm... I wonder how I could work that in.

As a police officer for seven years, I can tell you with 100% certainty that this will be no issue for you--even if you got a summons, it would not be a crime.

A crime is defined as a misdemeanor or a felony. Traffic tickets, as violations, do not count.

The only time that this would pose an issue is if you were intoxicated when you hit the other car and were arrested for DWI.

Accidents happen, especially with inexperienced drivers such as yourself.

Learn from it and move on.

From now on, be sure to keep at least one car length for every 10 MPH between you and the car in front of you at all times.

Keep your eyes way out in front, not on the car you are behind. This way, you can spot a potential incident at the earliest possible moment, instead of another driver's reaction to it. Besides, it's much easier to bring your eye focus in than out.

am I the only one wondering how his car caught on fire ni teh first place? crazy!

when I was an EMT I saw plenty of car fires, its not that uncommon or exciting.

True story. When I was a teenager in Oregon, I often went camping. I would go fly fishing and catch trout, gut them, and eat them after cooking the fish over my campfire. Now, in my mid twenties, I use barbless hooks and practice catch and release. But sometimes, in the dark of the night, I awake suddenly, catch my breath, and wonder, about all those dead trout, and, if there really is trout karma, can I really become a doctor.

My car caught on fire because there was a direct impact between the front car and my hood.. The car in front was a SUV and thus taller car while mine was a very old model Accord. Even I wondered why the car caught fire, but after thinking about it the reason I mentioned must be it. Also, it was raining profusely. It was a miniscule flame at first but after a while the fire spread the whole area under the hood was under fire. It took the Fire Department to respond a little late since there were many accidents in the area at the time. Mainly because a storm was passing by. Once the Fire Brigades pulled the hood up with axes, the fire was fed w/ oxygen and it seemed like the fire increased but then they were able to extinguish it since the base of the fire was exposed. I've never really had much thought abt the life of firemen, but after the incident, I really respect them. I would been scared to even go close to the car. I went close to the car twice and everytime I did heard stuff bursting and so on which kept me from getting some important stuff from the car. Well, it was all wet when I got it, but I did get the stuff back. It all felt like such a dream, even after 24 hours I think I've forgotten so many details.

Thanx Destro for the wise words, I will try my best to stay away from car in front as much as I could and keep an on incident even in front of the car I'm directly following.

So, wait..... Your car got nuked and you are worried about not getting into medical school because of it?!

Well, I probably have less knowledge of the law then you. And since I'm of the type, who asks questions when in doubt, I need to take care of that worry in my mind. I came from India a long time ago, but I do know for a fact that some accidents (othe than DWI's) are considered crimes in India.

I rear-ended someone. As thats always considered my fault, I "nuked" someone's car. And yes, now I know that it won't show up on CBC.

Rather than starting more threads: Do crimes commited as a minor show up?

What about parking tickets with a college that has a med school!!??

I think private institutional parking tickets are not even forwarded to official government records unless they are unpaid. That's how it works at my U. And the only reason they do tell the Gov't if a ticket is unpaid is because all the tickets "profit" goes to our local Gov't.

I jaywalked once. No one was around so I am the only one who knows. Will med schools find out and will this hurt my app?

Is this person serious? Because if he is then I just don't know what to think.

Work the car fire into your PS - what you learned about yourself, and how it motivated you to become a doctor.

Start it with "As I stood there watching my dying car go up in flames, I vowed..."

Even more reason to stay farther behind the car in front of you. Rainy weather increases stopping distance, and the roads are often the most slippery when it first starts raining. Anytime there is rain, ice, whatever on the road you need to put more distance in between you and the car ahead.

You will avoid a lot of accidents if you are in the habit of looking ahead and to the side, so you can anticipate a sudden stop before there's a massive car pileup. This has helped me avoid hitting someone, but didn't prevent me from being rear-ended 😡 Great tips Destro.

In my state (Ohio), a moving violation traffic ticket is technically a criminal offense, though a very minor one (it's called a minor misdemeanor here, maximum fine of $100, no possible jail time). OP, if you were cited, you may need to disclose the violation on your med school applications and physician license applications. Different states have different ways of classifying violations, so you may want to check with a lawyer. When in doubt, disclose.

I wouldn't think that this type of violation would hurt an application, unless there is a pattern of offenses.

I'd be worried about my insurance premiums...
Yeah, I was going to say, the worst effect of this accident is going to be on your pocketbook. 😱 vickpick, don't stress, man. You'll be fine. A lot of people have little fenderbenders when they first start driving. Just make sure you drive more carefully from now on, especially when the weather is bad. And unless any apps ask you if you've ever had a traffic ticket (which I can't imagine why they would), you won't have to report it. Also, don't put it in your PS, that guy who said it was just being a jerk. Your PS should be about why you want to go into medicine. Good luck with everything.

You actually think that was a serious suggestion?

Jesus, man, have you no sense of humor? A jerk?

Good grief, lighten up.

Trust me, I am very worried abt the premiums. I don't right now, I think I'll need to start doing so since my parents can't pay for all my whims.

No offense but I doubt SDN prowess crossover into the real world.

Here is what I think of people who disagree with me
:barf: :barf: :barf: :barf: :barf: :barf: :barf: :barf: :barf:

That means you are wrong

Also I pretty much hate the emoticon you used to express your emotions.

That sounds more like a personal statement about why he would want to be a fire fighter, not a doctor.
