Does all types of research count?

I am about to start a research internship at the Johns Hopkins Hospital but it isn't bench/clinical research. It is more related to public health and public policy. I've done bench research before, but I did not like it due to my PI being such a **** and not letting me touch any of his experiments... And I will be working under the CEO.. So this is more considered as applied research.. Has anyone done public health/policy research and it was looked down upon by adcoms?

I haven't done any policy research, but doing any kind of research (especially at Hopkins) gives you an edge over tons of applicants; I see no reason why pursuing research relevant to your interests would ever be "looked down upon" by an admissions committee. Gotta remember that SDN is absolutely, 100% not the norm; a lot of applicants apply with little to no research experience (and they get in!).

Do whatever interests you and be ready to talk about why you did it and what you learned during an interview. Adcoms want to see passion and interest; they're not looking for research robots. Good luck with your new internship!

What is the point of research? Why do research? Why do you think research is important part of medical school applications?

Not just being integral to medical school applications, but to career goals and values as well.

I would think its just as good as other biological research, but I'd like to hear your opinions.

If it's what you like, then do it. Do the research because you find it interesting, not because it would look "good" on paper; it'll make it way easier to talk about it during applications and interviews.
