Does anyone have a list of all the schools that incorporate PBL?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

I know that Pitt, Indiana, USC, havard and uconn do...but are there any others?

Thank you!

Someone told me that USC doesn't really do problem-based learning, even though they say they do problem based learning.

Gavin is correct as usual.

I am sure that there different models for PBL, but I can definitely tell you that as a student at USC, we are definitely involved in problem based learning. All of our learning revolves a new case that we get every two weeks. The case involves a ficticious patient who presents some chief complaints. It is up to us a group to learn what we need ie(anatomy, physilogy, histology, radiography, pharmacology, immunology...etc) in order to understand the patients problem. As a small group it is the student's who are responsible for determining what we need to learn. We have a faculty member who acts a a facilitator to make sure that we are on the right path. So we do have a PBL program. I don't know why someone would say that USC is not PBL.

Yeah.. I know Havard, Pitt, and USC all do, as well as here at Sydney. We don't have pure PBLs, but PBLs are worked into our weekly schedule around our lectures, labs, and clinic sessions. We do the full first two years of the med course here too similar to Harvard I hear, so most of our PBLs are centered around that part of our curriculm.

Is USC testing out the PBL structure or still working on integration, because I heard that if your admitted to USC, you may get a choice whether or not you want to do a PBL course, or a fully lecture-based one. Do you get a choice?

Indiana has a modified PBL curriculum. We incorporate lectures which are tied in with the cases being looked at at that time. Example; First years have lecture from 8 to 9 on Monday, then PBL Groups from 9 to noon. They have some Independant research time that week and then Thursday they will again have lecuture from 8 to 9 and PBL Groups from 9 to noon.

The current seniors are the class that became 100% PBL.

...You're an IUSD D1, jaxx? Mind if I ask who you are? Your secret would be safe with me. 😉

Harvard uses PBL at the med school (year one and two) and then again at the dental school (year three and four).
Good luck

How is the curriculum arranged so that the dental school uses PBL during the D3 and D4 years?
PBL is more clinic oriented along with didactic classes in year 3 and in the 4th year no more PBL...just get the patients cranked out and graduate.

UIC is really pushing EBD, but no PBD, ok?

At UConn: For first year- PBL groups study the same cases as med students, meet once a week. After that - 2nd 3rd and 4th year students meet together to discuss dental cases (every other week), the course is Critical Thinking in Dentistry. Same format as PBL.
