Does anyone have any information on Perfusion as a career?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I believe perfusion specialists are technicians who have been trained to take patients on and off bypass machines.

...this might help: http://www.mshealthcareers.com/careers/perfusionist.htm

"Employment opportunities for perfusionist are expected to fluctuate from high to low throughout the next decade. There is an expected expansion of 20% - 35% in job opportunities over the next ten years. This is partly due to the rapidly aging baby-boom generation that will require more open-heart surgeries as they get older. There is also added emphasis on cardiac health due to the fact that heart related illnesses are responsible for a large number of deaths each year. There will also be job openings due to current cardiovascular professionals retiring or leaving the field for other reasons. Because the profession is relatively small and competitive, job security should be high for these cardiac professionals."

edit: 86K average salary, not too bad!

Hmmm this seems quite interesting. Thanks for the info!

Perfusion is a master's degree program training you to run the heart-lung bypass machine during CT procedures.

I work in a cardiac OR, the perfusionists I work with all seem to enjoy what they do and are pretty happy in general. One thing they've mentioned about their programs is how small they are - ranging from 6-12 people!
