Does anyone have any stories about being rejected after being strongly hinted that you were going to be accepted?

My friend showed me an email where his interviewer said "expect to hear some good news soon." He was rejected from the school shortly after. I know there is no guarantees, but thought the story was a bit funny/sad. Anyone have any similar experiences?

My friend interviewed with the dean of admissions at one school in Texas last cycle and was told by the dean that he was guaranteed a spot at their school near the end of his interview.

The school eventually waitlisted and finally rejected him near the end of the cycle, lol. So essentially don’t believe anything you’re told until you’re actually holding that A.

I have a friend who applied ED and was personally told by the dean of admissions that they had high hopes for him, good chances, etc. pre-interview. Then was waitlisted after the interview, eventually rejected. Really unlucky :/

What I see from the story is that on paper, the candidate look great but bombed his interview.

This has nothing to do with luck.
