"New graduates are assuming roles as MTM (medication therapy management) pharmacists because that's what they are trained for and that's where the jobs are."👍

yeah, i read that and was laughing too.

it is going to suck to see many of my good friends in pharm school, who are set to graduate next year, with little to no chance of landing a job. Here in Northern Cali, it is pretty much saturated unless you want to work in Redding and/or anywhere between Fresno to Bakersfield. Even saying this, these areas may only need 10-20 full-time positions combined!

Don't trust the pharmacy manpower baloney, esp if you are in Cali. Best way to get a feel how employment is around the area you want to work in, is to network and talk to the right people. I've made connections with higher ups at the top 4 chain pharmacies and ALL have told me that in 2012, many graduates will NOT find full-time work. Heck, they would be lucky to find a part-time job. I would NOT be surprise to see the average starting salaries for pharmacists in the state of Cali to be around $ 40/hr. Sucks to say, even suckier to be witnessing it first-hand!

I thought it was funny that the article quoted someone who feels that the new schools are opening to meet the "2014" demand from the healthcare legislation. 🙄

what i meant are retail jobs, not hospital! most of these positions prefer and/or require a 1 yr residency! in addition, i wonder how many of these jobs will be avail the same time next year.

this article is garbage. they wont shut up about MTM. listen, they have been talking MTM for about 8 years now. Reality is, you are not going to generate income from it. these people have their heads in the clouds.

reality: the big chains have destroyed pharmacy.

BIG REALITY: all of your Hospital Pharmacy Directors and other rotation sites are PAID by UNIVERSITIES to take pharmacy students on rotations.

It is not just the schools fault, it is the people you are working with. They get paid for these students. Some places pay the "department". Others will pay the preceptor directly. It is a total nightmare disgrace if you ask me.

there is no pharmacist shortage in the next 5 years. this has been clear. i have been saying on these boards the past few years how you could see the market change for negative. people brushed it off. the reality is here and it will not get better for a very long time.

How long? I dont think it will ever get better because of automation, wags power, etc. How can the market absorb 14,000 grads a year. Even my dean said the pharmacist behind the counter is disapearing.

but what if MTM saves you money by being aggressive in preventative measures? at what point is it worth it?

part of my new job is researching this, I will let you know in a 2-5years:laugh:

Hehehe, I'm actually pretty bearish on the pharmacy job market outlook for the foreseeable future (10-20 years). But it seems to me there are still a handful of jobs in hospital pharmacy for qualified applicants with at least a year of residency and maybe a little experience. I don't doubt those will be disappearing within the next several years. For Nor Cal, this is especially true once California Northstate starts rolling out tons of new pharmacists next spring and they get residency trained a year after that.

Anyone who wants to do pharmacy has gotta realize that retail is dying. Nobody should go into pharmacy expecting a full career in retail. Not that hospital is all rosy either, but you'll have a much easier time finding a job with a residency because without one half the doors are closed to you. The academic jobs will start drying up soon too when no new schools open up anymore.

This is why im dropping out of Pharm, i wish my guidance couenselor had told me the truth. Do you guys think the economy has anything to do with the pharmacy job situation?

Some of it. Many of the older pharmacists aren't retiring because their retirement fund has been growing for the last 10 years. Look at Dow Jones for the last 10 years and you'll see.

The over supply due to all the new school a huge factor though.

What's wrong with this? 😕 Medical schools pay hospitals to train their students, too.

ya but everyone here says it is the schools faults.

look at your director you work with. your pharmacy director gets paid PERSONALLY. check made out to him to be in his pocket as do a lot of preceptors.

additional money for them. so while the profession tanks, those guys just line their pockets. the schools wouldn't keep springing up if those people didnt keep giving them options to exist.
