I'll be doing genetic research this fall (20hrs a week for free). My school is offering multiple research jobs for civil engineering at 20hr/wk for $13. I never done anything like it but it says you must be able to work outside and lift 30 pounds. Is this seen as < bench research or equal? Im more interested in basic science but I REALLY need the money at this point but also want to continue research so will this suffice for medical school or is it a stretch?

I'd look more closely at what the engineering 'research' entails. It could be anything from bench-top research to you standing outside holding a dumpy level doing surveys. If it sounds legitimate than that would be my recommendation. If not, that's a much more difficult decision.

I find the civE's "must lift more than 30 pounds" a bit sketch...make sure this isn't some kind of lab assisting job if you're really intent on doing pure research.

20 hours/week really is a LOT of your time, so choose carefully. Personally, I would take the civE job, make the money, and look around for lower hour research positions while I'm at it. If you don't mind doing civE research, maybe once you get to know the lab you can even ask around for a research position there. Both me and my roommate did this and got our research positions that way.

Will medical schools see this as sufficient research?

If you need the $ and you can get hired, call this employment and not research. It might be hypothesis driven research but I highly doubt you'd get a hand in designing experiments, etc. It sounds like the equivalent of washing glassware and making gels.

The 30 lbs requirement sounds a lot like a DoD gov't job description. It may just be standard fare for a position with a military contractor/ SBIR etc. Employer. Furthermore, concrete "research" also rings a bell with this old firepower engineer as possibly government funded.

It is unlikely to count as research, as it sounds right now. There is no shame in earning a decent wage. But I agree with Lizzy - probably not going to count as research. But that's based on little info.

Haha...missed the "sensitive" security level requirment. This is definitely a "g-job". You might not be working directly for green suits, but they will be footing the bill ultimately. Even if this is a DARPA project, it is likely well defined already so that there is little in the way of hypothesis generation or experimental design. Unfortunately, many engineering summer opportunities are too short and not geared towards developing you as a researcher. I stand by my earlier assumption that this is unlikely to be a research gig for medical school purposes.
