Yeah I was hoping for other replies because this question was confusing to me.

If it’s the paper BPS certificate, yeah they probably need permission before they physically take it from you to hang up (why would they hang it up, that’s weird).

If it’s the actual displaying of the credential against your name, no, because you don’t actually own the BPS designation and that’s like asking if they need my permission to post my degree when writing “Confettiflyer, Pharm.D.” on a newsletter or something.

Back when not everyone had certification, my hospital used to advertise "We have two board certified pharmacotherapy specialists." I always wondered who knew what this meant and if anyone cared. As far as I can remember, they never asked for permission...I don't even think they paid for the exam/PSAPs.

1) No one outside of pharmacyland would have known what BPS cert would have meant, except possibly physicians who have their own parallel board certification system and probably assume ours operates similarly.

2) Being a BPS credential holder and requiring permission for my place of employment to brag about it is kind of a weird flex. In fact, that's probably a low-key sign that the person is some sort of sociopath.

Agreed and agreed at least up to a point, but it was the only explanation I could come up with when I read the OP’s post.

But: even if nobody knows what it means, it still sounds impressive. Like when you’re at a party and someone introduces themselves as tenure track faculty. If you’re not in academia, that means nothing…but it still sounds better than non-tenure track faculty.

At my last place of employment, where certification actually allowed increased responsibilities (namely pharmacist prescribing) two of the pharmacists didn’t want to participate as there was no financial incentive and they felt they were taking on increased liability. I can understand that, if they let me put in chest tubes, or something, I probably wouldn’t want to do it just for fun.
