Most of the previous threads mostly just ask if it's okay to take a class pass/fail. However, my question is stated in the title. I've sort of always wanted to take Spanish because it's probably going to be helpful in my future career as a physician. However, I was never really good at foreign languages (took Japanese in college). I know this was probably true for a lot of people but I'm intimidated that even for the very first class it's obvious that many of my classmates can already roll their R's and have a small vocabulary already to start.

I don't really need to take this class but I figure if I don't I won't ever do it as medical school will keep me busy. It's not that important to me, though, to stress out over.

It seems pretty unlikely you'd fail like a Spanish 1 or equivalent class. If you're that worried about it though, go to the classes but don't enroll or something.

I am not the person to back down from something, so I say go for it. You might surprise yourself and what was initially stress may turn into motivation. The one thing I learned about languages: if you REALLY wanted to take it in the first place, you'll do whatever it takes to make it work (even if it is your last semester), but most of all, make it fun.

If you're worrying or even think you have a chance at failing a Language class, by all means DO NOT take it. There is no point really. Not to offend, but taking one class is not going to have as great of an impact in learning the language as you might think. You're better off picking up some good books, watching Spanish tv/news and joining some groups to practice. This way, you have no chance of failing and you can/will learn the same thing you would in a 1 quarter Spanish class. Good luck with whatever you decide though.

I couldn't have said it better myself. It sounds like a risk and a waste of time. Not much upside.

just to update you guys

I decided to take this class and I am sort of struggling in it (I actually should have a B right now but it's more like a C+ b/c of grading errors and the teacher seems like an ass when it comes to changing grades for whatever reason). I should've made it more clear though that this class was being taken post-baccalaureate during my year-off and not at my undergraduate institution. Instead it's being taken at a local community college closer to home.

I e-mailed them my question about whether they would rescind if I failed a pass/fail class and their answer was no. I'm going to emphasize though this may only be true in my case since I already received my degree and may vary between medical schools. Just thought this information might be useful to other SDNers.
