Does having a double or triple major help?

Hi.. I'm new around here I was wondering if having a double or triple major is a bonus to getting into med school?

From what I've been told (just from advisors), it would give you a slight edge on someone with virtually similar stats and EC's. But you don't get style (or GPA) points for the extra major/classes/work.

And if you stay away from that extra major in Chem, you can miss out on the good stuff like Quant or P-Chem 😀

Yeah sometime it frustrates me how little attention is paid to these sort of things but then again, it'd be hard to judge how difficult a double major (or any major) is at one school compared to another without having to get into a really detailed analysis of the school's coursework.

It has absolutely no benefit. Develop extracurriculars instead.

From what I have been told (someone who double majored and has been through the process) is that it could give you something to talk about in the interview, especially if your second major is in something non-science or something that really interested you. It might also show some hard work/dedication to academics.

All in all, it's not going to make up for anything lacking in your app (gpa, mcat, etc.), so only do it if it's something your passionate about, not to get into med school.

As someone posted above, it definitely allows you to discuss your academics and interests in a bit more detail. I ended up graduating with two majors and two minors and this gave the interviewers a window into my mind. This actually came up in about 80% of my interviews (8/10 interviews). I was accepted at one of those 8 and waitlisted at 3 others.

However, as someone else mentioned, you do not want to do this if you will be lowering your GPA. However, I would tend to think that a triple major 3.9 > double major 3.9 > single major 3.9...

I never really thought of it that way but you are right. Double or triple majoring seems like it should be accounted for...
