Hi guys, i was just wondering does it really make a difference whether you have published articles or not? I know is good to have and talk about during the interview.

I have been working in a research lab and I don't have my own project, i just help out my supervisor with her projects. So should i ask for my own project or would it be ok to apply to med school without any publications?

Thanks guys

it can help, but it certainly wont hurt not to. The vast, vast majority of applicants do not have publications

Of course it makes a difference. However, it only makes a positive difference. In other words, not having one will not hurt you; however, having one will help.

Hope that makes sense.

a bra.

i think it depends on where you apply. so if u apply to a research school that wants to churn out scientists or academics maybe being published is a factor. if not, then no it wouldnt be important. i think the main thing to learn is developing an appreciation for how scientific data and findings are generated and disseminated and applied. does anyone agree with me here on this point?

Thanks guys.

So since i have no publications and if the adcom asks about my research lab, do i just tell them that i help out my supervisor and tell them about her project?

thanks again

With this level of common sense, I'm not sure you will get an interview.

no you should tell them about your favorite pornstar when they ask that question (srs)

I had a few summers of research experience, but no pubs, and only one interviewer even asked the explicit question "Have you been published?" When I said no, it wasn't a big deal at all. I got into a bunch of schools, if that helps 🙂

This is apparently why med schools require English courses and why there's a verbal section on the mcat.

it only "makes a differnce" for residency.

Not really. Most specialties it again is just a plus, just like applying for med school. Nice if you have it but if not, plenty of people don't have research.

And most people don't put their pre-med research on their residency apps so a research paper during undergrad wouldn't make any difference for residency.

Reiteration station. OP, this is the answer to your original question. Since you have no publications:

Thanks guys.

Firstly, give the gist of the project and what your supervisor is trying to figure out through her research. What question is she trying to answer?

Secondly, reflect a little on what you've learned through the experience. Give them an idea that you understand the scientific method and why research is important (in a general sense).

Lastly, important is not a verb.
