Does it matter where you get your MBA (for dual degree)?

I know this has been addressed a million times. But it's a simple question. I'm thinking of doing the PharmD/MBA (4 year) program at UK. However, I could just do the 4 year PharmD and then work a few years and try to get into a more prestigious institution.

Does it really matter?

(wanting to work in retail)

If you were going for strictly MBA, then probably (so my econ instructor said), but since few institutions will need PharmD/MBA and the ones that do are probably aware of which one offer the dual degree. I'd say it probably won't matter. Especially not in retail. Even if you got them separately it would probably only matter if your MBA was from some degree mill.

I thought MBA in retail might help you get promoted to a higher pay grade (Pharmacy Manager?)
and plus it'd be nice to see the business side of Pharmacy if I ever wanted a change.

Ofcourse I may be way off here.

I agree with this statement.

As could I. I think the dual degree is uncommon enough that it would probably be beneficial, but not really necessary on the retail side. Not sure at what point in retail it would become necessary, though I'm sure the more involved with books, and less involved with pharmacy, the more it becomes necessary.

Great points VancTheTank!

That's not to say that you can't find an admin job right out of school, but pharmacy admin is a funny thing. And by a funny thing I mean a hybrid of clinical knowledge, critical thinking skills, and business/political acumen.

However, I doubt anyone would hire a 25 year old to an administrative position with zero full-time non-internship experience (even with an PharmD/MBA).

Surely I am correct? And if not, I would love someone to elaborate on this position and its difference from regular staff pharmacist.

Probably rare for hospital, but I do know of community pharmacies hiring new grads on as managers. If you did a PGY2 admin residency you might be able to go straight to such a position in a hospital, all depends on your market.

As an aside, pharmacy admin is not a highly sought after job. At least right now. The main problems are personality and compensation. Most people who are drawn to pharmacy have personalities that are at odds with management. Book smart, introverted, and non-confrontational. Currently, full time pharmacists are very well compensated for ~40 hours a week. Taking on more hours and more responsibility for a marginal increase in pay is a tough sell to most.

Looks like you've got a lot of great advice to give the students around here...welcome to the forum!!! 👍

I'm extroverted and I enjoy arguing. Someone hire me as a manager.

yea i got manager spot at wags pretty much after graduation

How? I mean I doubt that other staff pharmacists didn't mind a young gun jumping in right over them (just asking, big ups to you).

Also, was the pay significant more (10%+) or just marginal (few thousand) than a staff pharmacist?

Based on my limited experience, why would anyone with right mind want to become a DOP? Just way too much responsibility and headache from everywhere, not worth for the compensation they usually get.

However, I want to be a DOP and I guess I am crazy.

Thanks! Seems like a good group here. I have lots of questions of my own, I think we can all learn from one another. This forum has a nice informal feel compared to the ASHP groups.

No No No!!!! We're not a good group!!!! We fight all the time and hate each other!! We're mean people... sarcastic... condescending!!!

Welcome to the forum.

err the pay isnt that much more, but bonus could be better at end of year depending on the numbers

for me it was the right place at right time deal, + the fact id been with the company for 4 years as a intern and all the pharmacists always spoke highly of me to the DM

Damn, when I read there were 8 new posts I got excited until I found out my THREAD HAD BEEN HIJACKED! 😱

Ah well I think I'll still do the PharmD/MBA at UK.

I am in my 2nd year course of pharmacy in the UK at present. There is no university which offers the dual MBA and pharmacy programme. The pharmacy programme here is called MPharm.

University of Kentucky you fool.

I agree. Usually, the money isn't worth the compensation / extra pay. Just have to keep an open mind and see if the DOP route will be a good fit for me in the future.

If the answer is in fact Pitt, then I "probably" hate them like I "probably" need oxygen to survive.

And I don't just hate the basketball team...I hate the school, the football team, the neighborhood of Oakland, Heinz Field, the old field that was actually near the school, the panther, dan marino, the pittsburgh police for threatening to arrest me for "instigating a riot" at the last football game...and so on...

"Pittsnoggle" is still a dirty word to some of my fellow Cards fans. I actually like watching WVU, apparently you all know how to play this game called football that Louisville managed to forget about over the last few seasons.

Sorry about how Billy Clyde panned out...wait, I'm really not that sorry. We had a good thing going with him at A&M...and y'all yanked him from us.

Bad karma.

Yeah, in retrospect not a good move for anyone involved. The first game I ever saw him coach was TAM beating UofL in Lexington, which is funny is a bizzaro-world kind of way.

On the topic of karma, coach Cal seems to be bringing along the predicted baggage. We shall see what we shall see.

Yeah.. that was a good game..right in Rupp as I recall. He was wearing a blue tie..and we suspected he was already intervewing for the job.

We still think BCG can coach.. yet some of us think maybe he was lucky... we had Acie Law, an All American who elevated our team. But BCG is a drunk..
