Does it take longer to get into dental school if you major in something like history then if you were to major in something like biology or chemistry?

not really. u just need to take the required bio and chem courses that the dental school wants. if u can balance those bio classes along w/ ur major then u'll be fine. but u have to have a high gpa in ur major and in these bio/chem courses too....well that was a given. -_-!

thanks some people were telling me that it would take longer 🙂

Can you take bio or any of the pre reqs as electives?

This is a question you should ask your advisor at school. But yes, you can take bio prereqs as an elective course while getting your history degree. This is how many double majors work (one major such as history is taken as main classes while the other major such as bio, is taken as elective classes). :luck:

Maybe I can chime in here with something, being a History major and all. I have not been accepted to dental school yet, but I think I stand a pretty good chance at it. Balancing the different course loads can be a bit of a challenge, but it is not impossible by any means. I know that you asked about if it takes longer to graduate, but I would like to answer the better question is that does being anything but Bio or Chemistry major hurt you in the eyes of the admissions folks? I dont think it does. Your pre-reqs will give you a solid science foundation and enough exposure to science to show that you will be able to handle Dental school. Your humanities classes will show that you are a well rounded individual with eclectic interests and such. Is that an advantage? I think so. To me a Liberal Arts degree with the science pre-reqs is THE perfect way to get a solid education in many different areas. And in the end, that is what adcoms are looking for. Of course it doesnt hurt to have a good gpa and a rocking dat score to boot.

the only problem is that if you dont get into dental school, you're 'stuck' doing a masters in your history field, rather than doing scientific research in biology or chem

but i guess alot of people dont have the desire to do that anyway. i'm not sure why you would want to be a detnist at all, if you are not totally intersted in science

also, in my uni certain bio courses are only available to students in certain programs. you should check and make sure you can take all the pre-req courses though
