As long as your application is up to par, service to your country is one of the best additions to an app.

If you have a decent MCAT, GPA, shadowing and clinical experience, your service is like adding 0.50 to your GPA. It shows grit, teamwork, selflessness, discipline, willingness to work in a hierarchy. Med adcoms eat it up.
