Hi, I am an international medical student (Mexico, Im a good hombre), I studied Physical Therapy, then went into med school. I’m really into Physical Medicine, especially MSK I feel like I can add something extra, to the field.
I know that PM&R its super competitive, and really hard to get in, even for AMGs. But I want to know, would my PT background help me?? (or it just sounds cool in my mind), and if, what scores would give me a chance, so programs take look at me. Or what else do I need??
I can get into a residency in my country, but as I compare it with the state’s programs, I feel like there is a huge gap, between them. For example, you can’t go into a pain fellowship after PM&R.
Do I have a chance, if I work hard??? or should I better stop dreaming and stay in my country.

Thanks folks!!

Look for the FMG friendly programs and audition at one of them and do really well.

yes, your physical therapy background will help. although pm&r is competitive, it is not impossible to get a spot. if you are willing to go to a program that doesnt fill or may not be the most desirable, you probably can land a spot. good luck

Personal statement is incredibly important. You want to sell your prior work experience as a PT from the very beginning. That’s going to be essential for your application. Im not going to lie...your FMG status hurts you. You definitely need to apply more broadly and try to get/do well on auditions.
