Does not having a driver's license make your application weaker?

I don't have a driver's license because driving around hasn't been a necessity in my life. Does this question come up in interviews and can they base their decisions on it, especially if the medical school highly recommends students have a car to get to classes/rotations?

PS: I currently don't have a license but am probably going to get one for medical school.

I can't imagine why anybody would ever ask you about it during the admissions process, they have more important things to worry about.

Keep in mind some schools do actually require, rather than highly recommend, a car for the clinical years. How they go about verifying this I have no idea.

The batteries may get quite expensive.

Do you honestly think they're going to hold it against you if you don't have a driver's license? Think of all the applicants coming from metropolitan areas that travel by public trans and don't have one... It's not practical nor is it fair to discriminate against applicants that don't have a license.

I am 99.99% sure you're not going to get asked about driving in an interview. They have better questions to occupy their time with.

When my license expired, I used my passport for about a year. Not ideal for going out, let me tell you..

Out of curiosity, what do you use when you need to show a photo ID?

I am in the same boat and I use a learning permit. I genuinely hate driving and am taking my time with getting full licensure. Most states also have a basic ID card system available.

Whip out that passport baby.

Also, having a car during even preclinical years makes life a lot easier. Required volunteering activities, shadowing doctors, getting groceries, and of course, social events.

Largely dependent on your location. Having a car in a city school is a huge waste of time and money.

I highly doubt it. It's most likely that no one will ever ask for your driver's license/ID, especially not an interviewer. On applications they just ask for an SSN or whatever, not a driver's license ID.

Yeah, some state ID.

I'm applying this cycle and was just wondering if this ever comes up during interviews. It seems like the consensus is no since there are other more important questions to discuss. Regardless, I'm going to obtain my license this year in the likely event that I decide to go to a school that would require a car.

Thanks for the wisdom!

Your name is "RuralPhysician8" and you hate driving? What?

Lots of people who take public transit never get driver's lisences.

I would like to ride a horse or tractor for house calls if possible. Seriously though, I would prefer having a small business built upon the same property as my house so I do not ever have to really leave besides groceries (I am a home-body besides college, only go out on weekends). On call for a hospital? I will have to suck it up and drive.

Are you a troll?

The troll is strong in this one.......

Either that, or there are an inifinite amount of neurotic premeds constantly being mass produced every second in an attempt to overthrow the SDN population by driving them insane with Do-You-Even-Think-About-What-You're-Asking questions. SDN illuminati, you heard it here first, folks.

Well if you're aspiring to be a surgeon and make note of that in interviews, won't your interviewers hope you have a drivers license or will get one sometime in the future?

GPA: 4.0, MCAT 40+ (the + is for anonymity)
Drivers Licences test: Failed 3 times.

Anticipated results: auto-reject

edit: they dont ask, though I am pretty sure depending on the school you will need one for rotations

Libs would be all over such disgusting racism if ADCOMS required having proper ID.

If a premed asks an incredibly stupid question and there isn't an SDNer around to be irritated by it, does it make a sound?
