I don't have a driver's license because driving around hasn't been a necessity in my life. Does this question come up in interviews and can they base their decisions on it, especially if the medical school highly recommends students have a car to get to classes/rotations?

PS: I currently don't have a license but am probably going to get one for medical school.

I can't imagine why anybody would ever ask you about it during the admissions process, they have more important things to worry about.

Keep in mind some schools do actually require, rather than highly recommend, a car for the clinical years. How they go about verifying this I have no idea.

Do you honestly think they're going to hold it against you if you don't have a driver's license? Think of all the applicants coming from metropolitan areas that travel by public trans and don't have one... It's not practical nor is it fair to discriminate against applicants that don't have a license.

I am 99.99% sure you're not going to get asked about driving in an interview. They have better questions to occupy their time with.

I am in the same boat and I use a learning permit. I genuinely hate driving and am taking my time with getting full licensure. Most states also have a basic ID card system available.

Also, having a car during even preclinical years makes life a lot easier. Required volunteering activities, shadowing doctors, getting groceries, and of course, social events.

Largely dependent on your location. Having a car in a city school is a huge waste of time and money.

Lol, I can imagine. It gets the job done, but it's like, "Here, let me take out my good-sized booklet that acts as a ticket to foreign countries."

I highly doubt it. It's most likely that no one will ever ask for your driver's license/ID, especially not an interviewer. On applications they just ask for an SSN or whatever, not a driver's license ID.

I'm applying this cycle and was just wondering if this ever comes up during interviews. It seems like the consensus is no since there are other more important questions to discuss. Regardless, I'm going to obtain my license this year in the likely event that I decide to go to a school that would require a car.

I would like to ride a horse or tractor for house calls if possible. Seriously though, I would prefer having a small business built upon the same property as my house so I do not ever have to really leave besides groceries (I am a home-body besides college, only go out on weekends). On call for a hospital? I will have to suck it up and drive.

Well if you're aspiring to be a surgeon and make note of that in interviews, won't your interviewers hope you have a drivers license or will get one sometime in the future?
