I was looking at the FREIDA website and noticed some programs does not participate in ERAS while most others do. Can someone please some light as to what this mean? Does the program accept applicants from outside of the match? If so, can a student apply to both ERAS and to the program independently? I imagine there would be some sort of agreement where the student has to drop ERAS to accept their spot if they're accepted at all. Thanks.

The program you gave the URL for does in fact participate in ERAS according to FREIDA...

ERAS is simply a central application service. Participation (or non participation) in ERAS doesn't have necessarily an impact on whether a program participates in a matching program like NRMP...

If you are enrolled in a US medical school and will apply as a 4th year student you as an applicant are pretty much bound to participate in NRMP and are not allowed to sign outside the match. Foreign medical grads and people who have taken time off after graduation (i.e. already matriculated prior to applying) are the only ones really allowed to legally sign outside the match.

Thanks, that was helpful!

It means it's more of a pain in the rear to apply. One of the programs I applied to didn't participate in ERAS, and I had to send in a paper application, paper LORs, have my USMLE scores sent seperately, etc. That said, it was a great program, and I probably had an easier time getting an interview because it was more of a pain to fill out the forms!

good point! I remember filtering out medical schools that required ridiculous number of essays or other stuff.
