It's important for some programs that prefer applicants with research. many others dont realy care. I dont think research can ever hurt with rest being equal.

It's not a replacement for having competitive board scores/clinical evaluations, but having strong research with multiple publications certainly doesn't hurt. I had a fair amount of research during undergrad/medical school and a good number of programs brought it up during interviews (even programs which are not traditionally known as research powerhouses).

Maybe at strong research programs it might help. I think at most others, it's not helpful. If you like research, do it. If not, don't.

Some programs have dedicated research tracks (usually an extra year with protected research time) that this would set you up well for. Typically these programs have some trouble filling the spots with serious researchers as there simply aren’t very many of them coming out of med schools.

Some departments have part of their mission to train and develop physician scientists. They probably try to take 2-3 residents a year who have real potential and drive to groom for an academic career. If you’re one of them it will most definitely help. If you’re not one of them, I think it’s a waste of energy to do half-assed research solely to buff your CV. The departments know most of their graduates will go into clinical practice. Anesthesia is not derm or ortho, it is not necessary to have research to match even into a top 3 program, whatever they may be. As Facted states above, do research if you like it. Otherwise do other stuff with your time. For most people, spending extra time studying for their steps will be a better use of their time.

No, those are “poster presentations” or “conference presentations” - “publication” implies it’s in a peer-reviewed journal.

In discussion with one program, they liked it when I pointed out how it related to anesthesia, so probably good if you can spin it as teaching you something that you can tie to Anesthesia

It can't hurt you, but most programs likely aren't going to care. At least the programs that I cared about at least, there are likely some heavily Type A personality programs that may. Most people don't go into anesthesia to do research.

I had one pub, not related to anesthesia. Nobody really cared. Except for one guy at Rush. He went crazy over everyone's research. Apparently he spends 50% of his time on research and felt a lot of residents should too.

But if the research is strongly gas centered I should definitely do it right? To demonstrate early and continued interest and whatnot. I probably will anyway since it's not very time intensive or inconvenient for me and will probably lead to a pub(s). This PI is the shiznit, very productive.
