I recently received news via email that the school's committee has already reviewed my file and has already arrived at a decision regarding my application. The admissions office told me that they can't tell me the status because the dean hasn't signed off on the decision yet. So I ask, do deans have to sign off whether someone is rejected or not? Thanks in advance!

Different schools may have different policies, but perhaps some students involved in admissions can weigh in on their specific schools' policies to give some kind of insight.

From my experience, I know that many schools vote on candidates and then give all decisions to the dean to sign, so he/she has the final call.

I think you're trying to determine how likely it is that you have been accepted, given that the dean needs to sign off on your app...but I don't know that you'll get much info like this. Usually each interview session or after a few interview sessions (once a month or once every two weeks, sometimes) the dean will review the decisions for all the candidates, then he/she'll release the decisions to the admissions office and students will be contacted about the decision. Even if rejections don't have to get signed off by the dean, the admissions office would likely still use this same statement to basically tell you that they're not at liberty to release the final decision yet.

Sorry and good luck with the decision! :luck:

👍 there'd be no way to really say specifically.

If the school won't tell you on the phone I am afraid you might have been rejected or waitlisted. This happened to me at one school where the admins refused to tell me about the decision and told me I would get the result in the mail which was a big fat rejection. Sorry to break it this way.

I think your completely wrong... in saying that the OP is def rejected. I know of a school that won't tell you either/or and people have been accepted. Anyway out of complete curiosity... do you think the dean has ever changed a decision from "reject" to "accept" or vice-versa? I am sure its happened now that I think about it..

I can tell you with several schools that they won't tell you the bad news on the phone but will tell you the good news. This happened to me at a school.
And they can't just reverse decisions that easily, that would be extremely unprofessional of them to do, adcoms in most US medical schools are extremely thorough people and won't give a student a decision unless its solid.

This is pretty presumptuous. OP, take advice like this with a grain of salt.

It's school specific. Some schools also have a dean of admissions, besides the dean of the COM. What dean is gonna sign the letter? That is the question to ask.

Don't worry man I saw your stats I am sure you will get in somewhere...and besides CCOM you didn't get rejected you got waitlisted (which I know still sucks and is easier to say than to take) but I think you will get in somewhere. 👍

sorry man. keep your head up, it is still early!

Wow, they reject you with a 3.5 and a 31, just wow. Atleast I was waitlisted for 9 months before being rejected. My stats were slightly lower than yours too.

it actually was a rejection, NO waitlist so they must REALLY hate me, both Erie and CCOM. I made an appointment with an admissions counselor to see what I did wrong or what they didn't like about me. I must've bombed hard on both interviews..

wow im suprised... I am sure someone has suggested this before but aside from your interviewing skills which may or may not need some work, do you think you could have a bad LOR?

yeah.. i suspect that.. but all my LOR writers told me that they wrote nothing but really great things about me. they emphasized how good of an LOR they were too. i dunno maybe one of them lied to me. i'll know by tomorrow!

Yeah let us know... I actually have heard of a girl that worked in a lab next to my lab that was horrible at doing w.e. it was she was supposed to be doing. She apparently couldn't even keep her cells alive. Anyway she wanted to apply to dental school and asked the professor for a letter, and the professor said i don't rly think i can write you a strong one but if you want ok.. and my friend who is one of the techs said he saw the letter draft saved on the computer and it said "at this point i would not recommend her for admission to dental school etc." So you never know

Just got off the phone with admissions counselor, turns out i bombed the interview. apparently i didnt sell myself hard enough. its not easy because some people like me just arent the biggest people person and the whole process is nervewrecking! i gotta suck it up and get my act together. next interview is coming up real soon.

Well hey thats good news... you can work on your interviewing skills. A bad LOR would just destory your chances at every school. Only thing I could say is being a "people-person" is an essential part of being a good doctor. You should know that, im sure you've been a patient at some point in your life lol
