does the number of schools you apply to affect the admission process?

Hey guys,

I'm applying to d-schools now, and trying to narrow down my choices. Having not so hot stats (3.53overall, 3.29sci) and admission getting competitive, I'm thinking about applying to 16 schools. I've heard that schools ask & know what other schools I applied to. I was wondering if applying to many schools would leave a negative effect on admission process. I'm applying to 4 in-state schools, but they all seem competitive. For those of you who applied last cycle, what do you guys think? Thanks in advance! 🙂

No limit on how many, but wow 16! you'll definitely have your work cut out for you (secondaries and such) as well as lots of money to spend. however, i do advise applying to more so you don't limit your choices!

from what i know, they dont know what or how many schools u apply to

they ask u, but its upto u to tell them and when u do, tell them the best schools u applied to

16 is alot but just be organized about ur apps and keep up to date with schools cuz they often loose stuff and misplace things

I think that is important to apply to a lot of schools just to have options. and if in an interview they ask you how many or what schools you apply to..you don't have to tell them "i applied to X amount of schools" it just makes you look a little desperate if you tell them you applied to a lot of schools. Just tell them that you applied to a couple in state schools be vague.

Try to buy the offiical guide to dental schools, and narrow it down if you can. I applied to 14-16 schools and it becomes expensive and time consuming keeping up with all those secondary applications, secondary fees, and interviews.

However, mathematically you increase your chances of getting into a program the more schools you apply to, but you should aim for a balance. If time and money aren't an issue for you then go for the 16!

sooo.... you applied to 14-16 for what reason??? your tag says you're going Harvard 😱
4-6 probably would have cut it

Hey golfpoker, i applied to 12 schools, kinda like you... and i guess i'll be paying $825 for the first set. I was wondering though, some schools (this example from UoP) say:
# Send these materials to the dental school at the same time you send AADSAS materials: Application fee $75.00
# Official DAT scores

so wouldn't the overall pricetag be like $1200 for ~12 schools for the first round alone because of schools doing this?

I am applying around 15 schools too, and I noticed that there are few schools requires supplemental at same time with the AADSAS :scared:

I applied b/f taking DAT and discovering SDN, so i was really clueless 😕 to the application process, hence why i try to give my insight to people during this upcoming process

What kinda info u dont have? If only DAT, u can always send ur DAT score later, just put down when u are going to take it.

Supplemental? Wow...what schools? and how much?

But some of the schools want you to submit a supplemental info and you should indicate how many schools you have applied to. Should I tell them the truth? Applying to 10 schools looks a little desperate I think.

Yes, which schools? You seem to have some of the schools I'm applying to. Please do tell me.

I don't know if this is still relevant but there is a link on AADSAS website under the "Instructions" section - second option up from the bottom "Dental School Supplemental Information". This tells you what each school wants now and what they want later.

Most schools are going to want $75 or so just to look at your application. Just another reason to keep your schools list short...
