Hi, I'm currently volunteering at a free clinic. I help schedule patients and get the resources for things they need help with outside of medicine.

Due to the pandemic, the clinic is mostly online through Zoom right now. For this reason, we get to sit in with the doctor and see them interact with the patient. Does this count as shadowing?

I would count it. You are with the physician in a clinical environment, watching his interactions with patients, and seeing what his work there entails.

I'd like you to have some experience of physicians' time outside of direct patient care... what time is spent looking at lab results, charting, dealing with insurance companies, etc. It is even helpful, I think, to get a glimpse of how much time a doc spends keeping up with advances in their specialty.

Given the circumstances right now, I think that’s a great way to keep up your commitment. But I am still volunteering in actual clinics (which are still running) so I’d try to do both if you hve the time

Got it! I tend to also work closely with these physicians in helping contact the patients and seeing how they want to follow up with the patients after their appointment. Does this count if I can't find in-person shadowing experiences by next June? The hospitals in my area still aren't allowing shadowing.

No, I haven't. COVID hit during the time I was to start shadowing.

You should try to get some shadowing and engagement in a clinical setting where you are taking in the clinical experience will all your senses (well, maybe not taste, we no longer diagnosis diabetes by tasting the urine. hahaha).

Absolutely! I'm still trying to get in, but I'm worried if hospitals don't allow shadowing until then if I'll still be okay to apply with these hours.

I feel as if applicants who apply in June 2021 and who did not start shadowing before March 2020 will be at a disadvantage but no one knows for sure.
