I worked for several years at an MRI center in a hospital doing MRI research. At the center they also conducted clinical research on the MRI scanners and in my spare time I watched doctors doing various studies, working with patients/test subjects and was also a test patient at times. Would that count as clinical experience? I mean, I could definitely smell the patients and all. It wasn't like "official" (scheduled) shadowing, more just that I was interested in what they were doing and if I had time, I could observe and they would explain the various scans, what they were looking at/for.

I would say clinical experience as a work related job not as shadowing... but it is still clinical experience!

Don't worry about what you label it. Just describe the experience in your application the same way that you presented it above. (Of course, polish the edges and elaborate on why it was meaningful to you.)

AdComs will probably be more interested in your genuine clinical interests than a cookie-cutter "shadowing" experience.
