Does this course load seem doable?

General Bio I (w/ lab)- 4 credits
General Chem I (w/ lab)- 4 credits
Calculus I (w/ lab)- 4 credits
Soc 260- Class, Rank, and Power- 4 credits

I feel like I can do it but I want to make sure I'm not getting ahead of myself since I'll be taking 3 labs.

Looks good to me, but it really depends on who you are. You need to assess your own ability.

I'd say it also depends on what else your doing besides school, too. 16 units is definitely doable if you have the time for it! I'm curious, what do you do in a calculus lab?

It is definitely going to be challenging--college courses and labs are much more intensive than high school. Completely unaware of this fact, I signed up for a very similar schedule freshman year and got destroyed (I took a 4-credit English course too). As music2doc said, you need to assess your own ability.

And just out of curiosity, what does one do in Calculus lab? 😕

I guess we were wondering the same thing, propylene!

Calculus....lab? Sounds stupid and useless. If you can take it without a "lab," which is obviously not required by med schools anyway, your schedule would be golden.

I wasn't sure myself. This is what it says in my school catalog.

MTH 229 Calculus Computer Laboratory
2 laboratory hours; 1 credit
Computer projects to reinforce calculus concepts from numerical and graphical points of view will be presented. Suitable mathematical software will be utilized. Problem solving techniques using the computer will be discussed. The students will be assigned a number of projects to be completed individually or in small groups.

csi?

I think this is the first time in my life I've seen a "calc lab". Hopefully it's just learning how to use graphing software and not something crazy like MATLAB.

I just found out that my school does use MATLAB for this course. Should I be worried? lol

Yes, be worried. I live with three engineers, and trust me, MATLAB ain't pretty to look at--on the screen or transcript.

It means you have to learn programming (but since you're CS I guess that's what you want). Be afraid, be very afraid! The MATLAB class at our school is notorious.

2 science, 1 Math, and 1 other is usually ok, especially if you're very strong in 1 or more of the subjects. I did something very similar for 2 terms and had no problems. I don't know about this Calc Lab though. I wouldn't do any more than 2 science labs myself, but not sure what type of time commitment for the Calc lab.

I'm currently taking Orgo 2 w lab, Cell Bio w lab, Calc 2, Sociology, and an Advanced Organic Synthesis Lab (FUN!) and tutoring, EMT-ing, plus a million other things. You'll be fine.

Yes this is can be done, just study and don't go out much.

Engineer here, and I love Matlab like its my baby. Brute force computing at its finest!

Get ready for a lot of this though:

Can it be done? Yes. I think it really does depend on your strengths though. 3 labs are terrible, but if your a cs person than it shouldn't be too bad. I have similar schedule now. Just replace Bio and Chem I with Bio and Chem II (with labs), replace Calc with a higher level math class (also 4 cred, but w/o lab), and replace the soc with a 2 cred religion class and a 2 cred honors genomics lab. 3 labs, 2 intro science lectures, a math class and another non-science class. Was/is it doable? Yeah, but I love science and math (double majoring Biochem/Mol Bio and Math). I find the labs themselves to be fun, but they are a lot of work.

Avoid the 3 labs if you can, but very managable if you really do like science and math.

Thanks for all the replies so far and by the way I'm a biochem major, not computer science. I have no clue why this matlab course is a requirement. If worse comes to worst, I'll probably just drop a class if it becomes too much since I'll still be full-time.

I somehow doubt that any course with the words "advanced," "organic," and "synthesis" in the title could ever be called "fun."

ORGO SUCKS 😡😡😡

You can do it. I have three science courses with labs and one graduate level course. In addition, I work full time and have a family. Time management is the key. Good luck.
