"FMG in a mediocre IM program doing PGY3 now.Planning to apply for cards this year. No card fellowship available in the IM program.
1) First author for the abstract accepted in TCT 2006.
2) First author for the abstract accepted in SCAI 2006
3) Second author in 2 abstracts accepted in AHA 2006 for oral presentation.

4) 1 case report published in a heavy weight Card journal as first author.
5) 4th author in a basic science article published in a lousy journal.
6) 1 case series in process.
7) 2 publications expected in the recent future as one primary author and 1 secondary author in JACC or minimum AJC.
8) Recieved best resident award last year.
Expected to get good LORs from PD and Cardiologists.

Can somebody rate this applicant."

We submitted 8 abstracts to the ACC annual meeting. I am the first author on 3 of them and all others second author. I did not take time off for doing research. My cardiologist says you have a really good chance to get into a university program. Is this true?

Can some experts in the forum respond? I am getting crazy. I would like to have realistic (positive or negative) answers so that I can make plans for next year.

Thanks

I think you have a great chance at fellowship joti. your research is more impressive than most cardiology applicants', you excelled clinically and you say you will have great LOR. those are all components of a successful application.

is the cardiologist writing you a letter? at this point the best way to improve your chances is to apply widely (esp. as an FMG) and have your faculty go to bat for you. it is very important that you have LOR from faculty who are known well nationally or will make phone calls for you. their efforts can often secure you a spot.

pm or reply if you have any other questions.

time for a reality check. i'm appealing to your common sense. what type of advise are you looking for?

if a bunch of anonymous yahoos on a public web forum tells you you're gonna do great, are you going to just pat yourself on the back? if they tell you you're full of crap, are you going to give up? after all of your hard work, do you really need validation from a bunch of strangers, especially since you clearly have several mentors and advisors who are invested in seeing you do well?

don't go crazy. equanimity under pressure is a valuable trait in cardiology. cultivate this skill. you've obviously worked too hard to simply give up now. there are plenty of cardiology slots out there, and it's just a matter of ascertaining which would be a good fit for you. apply broadly and strategically.

Thank you Qtip and P Diddy.

The reason I posted this because I got contradictory information from different sources. I am concerned because
1) I am a FMG. No complaints. So I am ready to run the extra miles I have to. I think that brought out the best out of me.
2) My IM program is mediocre and we dont have a Cardiology fellowship.
3) I would like to get into a good academic clinical program.

My Cardiologist is reasonably known but he is in private practice now. I am very positive he will write good LoR and make calls for me. He even told me to apply to top tier programs because only few residents get AHA oral presentation.

Also I am not at all tired, but sometimes get frustrated to balance between family and career. Also I have to decide soon what I will be doing next year.
I also dont want to waste lot of money applying to 100 programs. I am the only one earning in my family.
I know there are lot of experienced guys in this forum who knows about the current situation.

Any way thank you very much for the honest responses.
