"If you are referring to the recently revised standards issued by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA), which go into effect on July 1, 2008, then you are correct that osteopathic medical school Department Chairs of Internal Medicine and Family Practice must be DOs. There is no such requirement for other Departments, although COCA encourages them to recruit DOs to ensure that osteopathic principles and practices are being taught. "

What do you Medical Students think about this? Does having a DO faculty member ensure one is taught "osteopathic principles". It seems like to me, unless its OMM, an MD can teach as well as a DO in any course and become a department chair. DO's are chief residents at ACGME residencies all the time, DO's teach and are given chair positions at allopathic departments. This doesnt seem fair to me. I feel like the allopathic world is becoming more and more accepting but it seems like the top brass continually try to push it away...

I don't really know, but it seems that IM and FP would be the same at any school. And hiring a DO won't ensure anything, because said DO will instruct how he or she sees fit.

Its like saying they're going to hire a hispanic teacher to ensure that the students learn Spanish.
