Someone told me that when you apply for residency, they also take into consideration your GPA from your undergraduate school. Can someone please verify/disprove this? Thanks

I would say a big NO. Not once I was asked what my undergrad GPA was. Granted this was for ob/gyn but I had friends who interviewed in FP, IM, Path, EM, Gas, G. Surg and Ortho, no one mentioned they were asked their gpa in undergrad or were required to submit it. Seriously, if anyone has please let us know what program  .

After you make it to med school, nobody gives a rat's A** about your undergrad grades.

if you apply to SFMatch residencies (ophtho, neuro, etc), they require your undergraduate transcript. So I would say yes, the matter, but probably very very little.

what is SFMatch?

How about grades you received in a masters? Do they not ask for those as well?

Thanks!

SF Match provides "support services to applicants and programs to facilitate the application and selection process for residency and fellowship positions."

Ummmm...no.

The SF Match is the match for ophtho, neuro, and a few (either currently or historically) ultra-competitive specialties occurs in Jan/Feb as opposed to the NRMP match in march.

Undergrad grades absolutely do not matter for residency...not even a little.

And as for SF match...it is a private service that runs the match for neuro, neurosurgery, urology, and ophtho. It has nothing to do with the competitiveness of the specialty, as the most difficult fields, such as derm, plastic surgery, and radiation oncology, do not participate in SF match. Neuro is competitive, but not nearly as bad as those. And ENT, which is still exteremly competitive, just left SF match to participate in the regular, NRMP match this past year. SF match is also known as "early match" because it is run in mid-late January.

According to your link to your MDApplicants page, you have a 3.9 GPA. Why are you concerned?

that was the gpa i had when i applied last year....its been steadily decreasing ever since i got accepted....the reason i brought up this post was to see whether pulling off "Cs" would hurt me in the long run (when i apply to residencY)

i had relatively mediocre undergrad grades (like a 3.5).
i applied for residency to Ortho and someplaces (only like 3 or 4 out of >60) asked me for undergrad transcript... these places usually asked me for my MCAT as well. One place even asked for me to send a copy of my SAT!

I doubt they even looked very closely. bottom line is that if ur a kick as med student and are AOA and have good USMLE's then it wont matter at all what u got in your art history or eastern regligion class as an undergrad.

if u were a stellar student in college but then F'd up in med school that wont fly either... so dont sweat it too much.

SF Match = apply here if you want to be filthy rich

This happens but is rare -- and I really can't imagine it makes that much difference. I didn't hear of it for pathology or medicine, but a classmate did have to submit his undergrad transcript for an ENT program. He thought that was the end of that (had a couple of doozies on the transcript) -- but he matched extremely well -- anecdotal, I know, but relax about it. Really, just focus on doing well in med school!

By ortho do you mean orthopedic surgery or orthodontics?

In EM, no I don't care. I was never asked my undergraduate or law school GPA when I was applying for residency either
