Does UVa consider itself a rural school?

I'm not certain if they do or not. They seem to have a really grand opinion of themselves (not saying it's an undeserved opinion).

And if it's a rural school, what kind of issues does rural medicine concern itself with?

Haha, N-O NO!!!!!!!!!!

While a good number of the patients come from surrounding (less developed) counties, the University is known to pull from the professional subculture of the Charlottesville community. In other words, plan to get practice treating people on welfare as well as multi-millionaires. (I'm a "townie" and a UVa undergrad, so I pretty much know the ropes around here 🙂) I know a lot of people who'd get a good laugh out of that question, though...

Thanks. I went to school in Williamsburg and I'm vaguely familiar with Charlottesville. Based on its location, I only have a slight idea of what the town is about.

I wasn't sure of Charlottesville's demographics and your post clarified a lot of things for me.

I wasn't sure if they'd be offended if they referred to them as a rural institution. Seems like they might?

No, they are not.

However, the surrounding area is beautiful.

Charlottesville is definitely not rural, and I definitely would not refer to UVA as a rural school. Charlottesville/Albemarle County is surrounded by some rural counties, but that is true of many places outside of NOVA (including Richmond).

I'm surprised that you did not know that, living in Williamsburg and all! 🙂

Also, if you are judging what the town is about based solely on its geography, you would probably be pretty far off. Charlottesville is very different from the rest of central VA, I would say. It is fairly liberal for the area, has a lot of culture and history, etc. It is very beautiful, which you may know just from geography -- lots of trees, nice mountains. Sorry if you knew all this already!

Oh well, I hope they don't hold it against me. For the record, in my essay I didn't say they were a rural school but they were in a rural location. Guess I might be wrong. grrrrrrr....

So how would one characterize that part of the country?
