Everytime i think about it, i get pissed off. Sometimes I suddenly forget some person's name, even one that i say frequently.

I understand what I read the first time I encounter it. But after 2 days pass by, I forget everything. And this is reflected in my grades. I get a B, and then tell myself- ok, next semester, i'm gonna memorize everything and get an A. then next semester arrives and there isn't enough time, and i can't memorize sh%t, again. But I can remember things like 2 hot lesbians making out, and it doesn't fade from memory in 2 days. 👍

Med school feels like a memory contest. how do you guys do it?!!

/rant over

I hear you it is rough, that sounds like the majority of people including me.

The information is finite though, i keep telling myself. and even now towards the end of M1 things are starting to repeat in lectures making it easier/quicker which is how i think 2nd year goes hopefully. its only 2 years...

My memory is just fine for school (my studying method is basically remembering all the studying material in the books for the exam. I never take notes and I'll continue that way until it stops working). I'm even surprised by how much stuff I can hold in my memory. But it's short term, so don't ask me to remember all the details 2 weeks after the exam.

My only problem so far is that I just have trouble remembering names of my classmates lately, and that's bugging me.

Yes, med school is deffinetly a memory contest. I have found it that at times I can recall the most useless and trivial fact, but cant remember something that you do need. I rarely use notes also, but it helps to make up stories to make that pharmacology fun.

Rest assured that any knowledge that really matters will be beaten into your head during clinical rotations. 98% of what you learn in the first two years means jack since it's not stuff you apply everyday, just think of it as trivia.

Get real good at binging and purging. It got so bad during pharm, myself as well as many other classmates couldn't remember what was on the last exam after a week...

Binge
Purge
Binge
Purge
...

🙂

i forgot what we were doing, krammit.

I've just forgot what this thread was about... something about 2 hot lesbians?

I have a terrible memory
1st year I read to understand content .
I understood the stuff...if it was a little complex I drew out a diagram a cuple of times. Worked out pretty OK.

2nd year started the same. Didnt work so well -- didnt fail but it was close
I tried making mind maps and comparison charts -- little helpful. not much
then I just started making flashcards... hundreds of them.
I also make them on the computer.
These are like one-fact cards.
Then I drill, non stop. No thinking, just drilling.
Things have been going much better, except that I am completely miserable.
I dont know why I am going to be called a "doctor"... theres no understanding of theory... I've just memorized a bunch of books (which are essentially technical manuals).... I hate it

In short, I hear ya man... make flashcards.

The least I read the better... so I try to understand as much as I can, within a limited amount of time. In reality, understanding goes a long way, but the minutiae of details still come up in exams. So far, I found that a good study week before the exam is good enough, I get high 80's, which is fair for the effort. Yeah, you will tell me but you can get 90's if you put more effort, well I want to have a life, go to the gym, go out, read, meet girls et al...

I seem to retain most of the concepts of this med 1 year. Who knows, maybe this summer of drugs and alcohol will erase everything...

Hahah true dat!

Do you know what I love the most about medical school? I don’t remember what the last thing my attending taught me was, I don’t remember what I did last weekend, I don’t remember what I was drinking, and I don’t remember how or when I met the chick I ended up with. Even with all this going on, I walk into every exam I take with full confidence in my abilities and with my head held high. Who cares if you can’t memorize every little thing about medicine, if you worry about it you’ll just forget it anyways. Have confidence in yourself and what you know and everything should work out... well it does for me 😀
Wise words if taken correctly

Immediately after reading a chapter, give it another quick read. Then give it another quick read the next day. Then do some questions on it. That should go some ways toward bettering your retention.
