I've seen a few posts about what jobs/research positions to get during a glide year, but my situation is a little different. i just finished two yrs of FT post-bacc classes and am apping now. I have two kids and my plan was to stay home with them this year before starting med school in 2009. One is in the 2nd grade, but one hasn't started Kindergarten yet so I would like to stay home and spend some time with both as mom before the craziness begins again.

What do you guys think? Is this okay to say? I will most likely continue doing some volunteer work during this yr, but that's about it. The rest of my time will be spent making lunches, volunteering in classrooms, and helping with homework. Frankly, I'm really looking forward to it since my husband will be doing all this once I am in med school. Thanks for the input.

I don't know the "official" answer but I have to say that I'm planning on doing the exact same thing. To be honest, I figure that if I'm accepted I'm accepted. I want to spend time with my family as much as possible. It may hurt me a little down the road, I suppose, but the whole med school thing with family will take some sacrifice anyway.

You don't need to have a job or do research. Your volunteering at your son's school is enough. If you have a family, you already have a full-time job.

OP - I checked out your MDApps and let me add this caveat to the above.

What are you going to do if you don't get in this year?
I'd think about trying to continue to improve your app in case you don't get in this cycle.

Being a mom is a full-time job for sure, but maybe you could continue to take a few classes or something as well.

:luck:

Thanks for the candid advice. I do think it is likely that I will get into a DO school and I am willing to go that route. If that doesn't pan out though, my back up plan is to get a Masters degree and to try again in a couple of years. If I do have to go that route, I would start graduate classes next fall so it wouldn't really affect my plans for this year.
